Timed Writing 9/12 Intro

College is where many people find who they truly are or want to be. College is a time to figure out what you believe in and how you would like to live your life. In Ten Little Indians by Sherman Alexie, there are many protagonists who struggle with their identity. In “Search Engine” the main character, Corliss, struggles with her identity and who she is supposed to be. When she goes to college she finds that she loves to read poetry, even though her family does not approve. There are similar characters in The New York Times video “Dream Catchers: Four Students and the Dreams They are Chasing”, a journey of four adults who want to better themselves by going back to school. All of the stories from Ten Little Indians and The New York Times video are about individuals on a journey who are faced with overcoming obstacles they thought were impossible in order to find who they truly want to be. The obstacles we face in life are what make us who we are in the future and eventually make us stronger.

Weekly Write “How do you want to spend your time in college?”

In college, I want to spend my time meeting new people and succeeding at all of the classes needed for my major while enjoying my time here at Ole Miss at the same time. I will spend my time studying for the most part and going to class, but I will also be going to the football games and going to movies and all of the fun things that I can do in my freetime. My studies are my first priority, but I am going to make sure I do not overwork myself. I will also be working and making sure I have all of the essentials to succeed. I do not want to spend my time procrastinating and making my stress even worse.

Search Engine and Frank Snake Church Kernal Essay 9/6

Both “Whatever Happened to Frank Snake Church?” and “Search Engine” from Sherman Alexie’s “Ten Little Indians” are about the main character truly finding themselves. In the beginning of both stories neither of main characters realize the true meaning behind their treacherous journeys. Frank and Corliss deal with different situations in their stories, but in the end they both find something out about themselves that they never knew before. I believe it definitely takes time to find yourself again after something tragic happens.

Frank Snake Church deals with the loss of his parents. As he tries to cope he meets many new people along the way who help him find himself again. The first thing he decides to do is to start going to the gym in order to play basketball well again and get in shape. “Trying to move exactly like his father, to honor his father through muscle memory…” (Alexie 204). I think at first he thought he was doing this to prove to his Dad that he could and to honor him, but later he realized it was for himself.

Corliss has a similar journey. She has to deal with her family’s negative opinions of poetry, which is what she loves. When she finds out Harlan Atwater, who she took so long to find, is not at all what she had expected it changes her views of everything. People can make a person feel like they are supposed to be a certain way because of stereotypes. Because Corliss was Indian she dealt with this. Not just from regular people, but also from her family.

In both stories, the main characters both had people come into their lives who changed their perspective on life and how they looked at things. These people are so important in the main characters’ lives because they help the protagonists grow and eventually find themselves.

Weekly Write #2 Ole Miss Perceptions

The University of Mississippi has many different stereotypes. Before I came to Ole Miss, even though I am from Oxford, even I had different perceptions of Ole Miss. I imagined this university only having students who did not care about their education and only wanted to have fun and party. Sure there are still many students like this, like there are in every school or university, but I was pleasantly surprised when I realized how many motivated students there are. It also depends on who one surrounds themselves with. I also imagined my teachers being a lot more rude, which I am so thankful they are not. Having this perception actually helped me become more independent with my studies and homework because I knew my teachers would not spoon feed me. I think that Corliss would fit in well at the University of Mississippi. Anywhere someone goes, especially on a campus this large, anyone can find someone they get along with or similar to them.
