Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Gee, James. What is Literacy? Journal of Education, Volume 171, Number 1, 1989. http://jamespaulgee.com/pdfs/Gee%20What%20is%20Literacy.pdf. Pgs. 18-23. Accessed on 31 Aug. 2020.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words James Paul Gee first tells the audience about discourses. When speaking of a discourse he means, a socially accepted association among the ways of using language, of thinking, and of acting that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or social network.” As humans we all acquire a discourse. Usually beginning with a primary discourse at home, and then eventually a secondary discourse away from home. Gee then goes on to show how discourses relate to literacy. There is also a difference between acquisition and learning.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. “This is our socio-culturally determined way of using our native language in  face-to-face communication with intimates.”

Gee says intimates to be described as “people whom we share a great deal of knowledge because of a great deal of contact and similar experiences.”

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This article directly relates to “Inviting the Mother Tongue.” Just like in “Inviting the Mother Tongue,” Gee states that for example “black children use English to make sense of their experience differently than middle class children.” In both articles these children use, “language, behavior, values, and beliefs to give a different shape to their experience.”
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. In your own words, how would you describe literacy?

“Sponsors of Literacy”

Reading Journal

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Brandt, Deborah. Sponsors Literacy. 1988. http://comphacker.org/pdfs/632/Brandt.pdf. Pgs.166-172. Accessed 30 Aug. 2020.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words According to Deborah Brandt, “Sponsors are any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy-and gain advantage by it in some way.” Sponsors can be people, teachers, or even laws that influence your reading or writing. You may never have even met your sponsor. Brandt describes a couple of examples to describe the way these people learn. She describes the differences between Raymond and Dora and the way their sponsors affected them later in life. These examples show the different routes and sponsors these two people had. Brandt does a great job explaining sponsorship and reading/writing have in common.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. “How despite ostensible democracy in educational chances.” Ostensible: stated or appearing to be true, but not necessarily so.

“Latin America, compadrazgo reintegrated native societies badly fragmented by the diseases..”

Compadrazgo:the reciprocal relationship or the social institution of such relationship existing between a godparent or godparents and the godchild and its parents in the Spanish-speaking world (as in South America)

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This reading connects to “Inviting the Mother Tongue.” Similarly in both, they talk about reading/writing. In “Sponsors Literacy,” Brandt talks about how sponsors influence reading/writing. In “Inviting the Mother Tongue,” Elbow speaks out about how students’ writing is not being accepted in the classroom. They both describe how students’ writing come from some sort of sponsor.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Who sponsored reading/writing in your life?

Peer Group Resumes

  1. In all honesty, I would not consider myself a good writer. I feel as if I always get the job done and do the requirements I am told. I have also always had a good grade in my writing class, but I do not think I am a very good writer. So, in hopes for this year I hope to feel more comfortable writing and to actually learn to enjoy writing.

  2. I want feedback. I want to know what to fix and what my fellow peers think about my essay. I am not that comfortable with communicating, but I can make it work!

#1000BlackGirlBooks

Identity is a major aspect in all of our lives. Growing up as a white child in America we are not faced with as much hate or discrimination as other races are. Growing up while reading books I never even thought to realize that the characters were mainly white characters. It never affected my reading, but I would have loved to see other characters just like it is in the real world. After watching the Youtube video of Marley Dias and listening to her, her voice really struck out to me. She is a very intelligent and bright young girl. Marley stated that she would read books in school, and they would mostly be white children in the stories. This just blew my mind. However, when I really thought about it, it seemed quite true. When I think back to those small short stories, they were usually white characters. As white children we can relate to the characters in the book, but unfortunately these black children could not reflect themselves. They could not truly find their identities.

“Inviting the Mother Tongue”

Reading Journal

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Peter Elbow. “Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes,” “Bad English,” and “Wrong English.” From The Journal of Advanced Composition. 19.2 (Spring 1999): 359-88. Reprinted in Everyone Can Write: Essays Toward a Hopeful Theory of Writing and Teaching Writing. Oxford University Press, 2000.pgs.359-365.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes,” “Bad English,” and “Wrong English,” all home languages should be accepted in the classrooms. Students are always trying to correct their own home language to confide to the Standard Written Language. In return these students are receiving errors after errors. When speaking what comes naturally somehow when writing turns out to be inappropriate. Elbow  states in the article,“After all, we experience our language or dialect not just as some- thing we use but as a deep part of us. Our home language is not just inside us; we are also inside it.” As a student myself, I feel as if all languages should be accepted. We should not have to change how we speak to accommodate the Standard Written Language. Elbow does a great job explaining his reasons on why he believes every language should be allowed.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. The most common attitude toward “wrong” language is to want to get rid of it. Citizens of all sorts-whether they are teachers in the schools, college faculty, members of the mainstream general public, spokespersons for culture, or legislators-are likely to agree that a teacher’s job is to “improve” students’ language.” The whole concept is to improve students’ language. I did not see new terms or concepts.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This reading connects in several different ways. In the document from online titled, “We Must Help Students Master Standard English,” Jenkins states that he agrees that students should master standard english. However, in Elbow’s article, he thinks the opposite. They connect in several ways though. They both talk about the importance of learning Standard English, but they both disagree in some areas. Jenkins says by teaching students the proper standard English prepares them for the real world, but Elbow says that students should use their mother tongue.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Do you agree or disagree with what Peter Elbow has to say?

“FASTrack/Writ 101 Round Table”

Listening to the Round Table podcast from previous freshman students gave an insight on their past experiences. They helped relieve stress and gave helpful tips about freshman year. One piece of advice I took away from the podcast would be to have fun, but get your work done. Skylar stated, “Don’t Procrastinate and get your work done,” which influenced me to get a head start on my assignments for the week. Another piece of advice that I gained would be to get to know your professors. Also, get to know your FASTrack leaders and advisors and take advantage of the one-on-one time. I feel like this will be very beneficial to me this semester, and I cannot wait to reach out for help. One thing I am most excited about this year is to meet new people and explore the many different things on campus. I am least looking forward to all the rules COVID19 has set on everything restricting many activities and events. One piece of advice I would give a student going into their senior year would be to take it all in. It goes by so fast so have fun, do your work, and make the very most of it.
