Identity is a major aspect in all of our lives. Growing up as a white child in America we are not faced with as much hate or discrimination as other races are. Growing up while reading books I never even thought to realize that the characters were mainly white characters. It never affected my reading, but I would have loved to see other characters just like it is in the real world. After watching the Youtube video of Marley Dias and listening to her, her voice really struck out to me. She is a very intelligent and bright young girl. Marley stated that she would read books in school, and they would mostly be white children in the stories. This just blew my mind. However, when I really thought about it, it seemed quite true. When I think back to those small short stories, they were usually white characters. As white children we can relate to the characters in the book, but unfortunately these black children could not reflect themselves. They could not truly find their identities.
