Race Affected My Writing

I think being an African American woman has affected my writing tremendously. One reason, people in today’s society don’t think we are capable of accomplishing many things like them and especially being a black woman really gives the world a reason to look down on me. Another reason I think being black has affected my writing is how some of us carry ourselves as women. People might think we don’t have the same knowledge and view on things because we are black. I can connect with 1000BlackGirlBooks because growing up I attended a predominately white school, I was looked down on because I didn’t have the same skin color, but I knew I could share the same knowledge as the other kids

FASTrack/Writ 101 Roundtable

1. One piece I think would be useful for me is when Skylar stated “…is that not all the professors hate you.” I found that part of her statement useful because when I was in high school, many of my teachers really didn’t care for us and how much we actually learned in the class, they were mainly just focused on the work they gave out and us finishing the work. Some of my teachers really didn’t even have a teacher’s spirit and didn’t really care if we succeeded in their class or not and that really made me uncomfortable and not really care to do the work in some classes. Another piece I found really useful was when Harrison commented, “I wish I would have understood or grasped just how much free time I would have on my hands… And I think the hardest part for me was structuring my schedule…” That was another statement I found useful because I know I had a set schedule on how things were going to go and when I had to do a certain thing, but now that I am in college I know I have to pace myself and keep myself on track with everything I have going on.

2. Something I am looking forward to most is meeting all the new people from different states and learning about the different cultures people come from. Also, I’m most looking forward to being away from home and having lots of freedom. I just need to use my freedom WISELY. Something I’m least looking forward to is all these strict rules we will have to follow because of the pandemic.

3. Advice I will give to an entering freshman or senior of high school is make the most of your years in high school because once you graduate, you are officially grown and will have to start making adult decisions. So enjoy every moment of high school because once you leave, there isn’t any turning back.
