Different Views of Writing

As a writer and communicator, I have produced many different types of documents. Writing I have used perspectives such as writing as a product, writing as self, and writing as an action.

Instructors, for the most part, have conveyed a similar perspective towards my writing, but it is the few teachers that bring new perspectives that students learn the most from.

Honestly, I have written for many differing genres, so it is hard to say whether I conveyed a similar perspective or not. What I can say is that I try to use perspectives that are useful to my audiences. If I am writing for a news article I write in the perspective of writing as an action, so I can convey a message. When writing creatively or for my book I am in the perspective of writing as self because it is an expression of emotion or thought. When considering school from my earlier years I strictly wrote for the document my writing was basic and formal hardly did I expand from the document to use another perspective.

I have never really considered myself a technical writer. I do have to write content for my dj page and for Rebel Radio, but most of that is not formal. When writing for those things I am writing as self because I am considering my audience, but I am using my writing as an expression or an extension of myself as the writer and author. I do think writing from this perspective has allowed me to expand past the writing for the document kind of thinking by using ethos.

So my best answer to whether I am consistent with my perspective when I write is no. I would rather think of it as evolving instead of consistent.

  • This is a valuable perspective, I think: Journalistic writing should always be writing as action. One of the main differences between a newspaper article about an event and a history article written about the same event 10 years later is the proximity to the action. I think it’s interesting that you view writing for school as writing-as-product. I think that’s unfortunately true for most people: writing in school is about getting an assignment done and submitting it. I think if school-based writing had a little bit more “self” and a little bit more “action,” students might find it more relevant. Nice work on this post.
