Blog 1- Students Today

“A Vision of Students Today” was produced 9 years ago, but is still so relevant today. The video shows how the value of a degree has increased, and we as students in higher education are privileged to be able to be pursuing a college degree because so many people can not. However, while the value of a college degree is high, so is the cost.

We as students are paying $100+ per textbook that so many teachers do not even use.In addition, many students are deeply in debt when they graduate. However, with the increase in technology costs may be lowered soon. For example, online textbooks are much cheaper than print versions. This advancement in technology is efficient, but also a double-edges sword. The Internet is a great resource, but many people prefer the print version. A tangible book in your hand is far different than reading it off of a screen. In addition, reading off of a computer screen allows for increased distraction. As the video said, college students spend an excessive time on the Internet on sites such as Facebook. Another great tool that the Internet provides is email. Email allows students to communicate with their teachers and other students easily. This is a fantastic tool, but it can also be overwhelming. As the video stated, on average students write about 42 pages for a class but write 500 emails. That is an astounding difference. Personally as a student, I can attest to the fact that some teachers flood my inbox with emails that contain information that is not relevant to me or send multiple emails in a week when only one email could have been sent. Therefore, students feel as though they never truly have a break from school. There is no “off” switch because every time we turn on our computers there is another email from your teacher. When is enough, enough? How can we utilize such a great resource to the best of its ability?
