pages 166-172

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words Deborah Brandt focused heavily on literary sponsors. She described how many people struggle with literature and writing based of class, race, etc. She then went into detail about how a sponsor work and what they are. They are basically anyone who helps advance your knowledge in skill for gain. They may help you become a skilled writer for money. They may help you create a work for access to polish it. There are many forms of sponsorship in writing. This is an interesting concept and truly made me think back. I had numerous sponsors who made it possible to write more skilled and correctly.

It connected to me in the way of teachers and tutors. I never thought of it but this is what those were to me. They helped me succeed in writing for finical gain. It was a very cool concept you can apply to almost anyones writing career.

Identity

Growing up in Mississippi I often felt like books related to me. I read so many stories about adventurous young white boys like myself. I grew up being able to relate to characters like Huckleberry Fin and Tom Sawer. These were wild kids out on the river or in the woods just like I was. Growing up reading these books I never truly saw that they positively depicted white males as superior to women and African Americans. When I moved to Costa Rica in 9th grade that view was highly changed. We read those same Mississippi books but with an outside view. We discussed how awful that view can be and how it must make others feel. Marley Dias made such a great point about there not being enough books read that empower minorities. My whole childhood I got to read about white males in charge while my black friends had to hear about enslavement in a casual setting. That is truly sad and not very empowering to minorities. I think that books should be a good mix that helps everyone feel empowered and important. In the end that’s what will make us all better as people and a world.

Peter Elbow

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words The article was a breakdown of Peter Elbows internal conflict over dialect. He broke down how he struggled to find a balance between proper english and personal dialects. It was really cool to hear all of those dialects broken down from an educational view. I never thought about how prejudice against certain dialects could make people feel how I often do when I travel. My light southern accent has led to judgment in places I’ve been. I hope over the year I’ll be able to embrace writing styles that can help me and embrace my personal dialect. No matter what its key to be open minded. I think this article will open my eyes to some different ways of writing.

I have often found in my travels that people often look down upon southern accents. I really related to the article in that way. I think I have really tried to write completely different than how I truly speak throughout my high school carer.

A Writer can be defined in many ways. By definition it’s someone who writes for occupation, dedicated themselves both mentally and physically to writing, or just someone who writes. I however believe it can’t truly be grasped as a specific idea or definition. Many writers are simplistic and naturally gifted in that ideas flow from their words like paint from a brush. Other writers seem to require the immersion of their entire selves into something in order for it to flow into a work. Then there are some that you truly just can’t understand or see the inspiration in. I believe I am more closely related to the second of those who is truly immersive. My writing is often times best when I have been apart of the core subject of my work. A good friend of mine and very unique writer Hank Burdine ounce told me a very strange but relevant theme to my writing. He said “there is no disaster when you learn from the master”. What he meant literally was that he was the master and if I learned from him thing would be ok. While in my eyes I see it as if I let what I am writing about master my thoughts then it will lead to work I can be proud of. Every writer is different in their methods of doing things. What matters in the end is that ones own writing style fits them.

Unit Reflections

For each major essay assignment, you will complete a long-form reflection about your experience writing the paper. Your teacher will provide specific instructions for these reflections.

Weekly Reflections

Weekly Reflections are longer, more thoughtful posts that you will complete about every week of the semester. Topics for these posts will vary by instructor, but they will usually be completed outside of class and have a specific word-count requirement.

Daily Writes

These are 5 minute or less quick writes that we’ll complete in class most days. This will also include any in-class writing about the readings that we do. If you don’t bring your tablet/laptop to class every day or if you prefer writing on paper during class, you’ll need to type up and post these after class.
