The author is immegrant who came to the US when he was young. His father wanted to become more “American” and even told Tizon that he should pinch his nose everyday to make it become narrower . Tizon classified his family as poor and the phrase Land of Giants” represents that Americans are bigger and better in everything and that since he was “immigrant poor” they are small in everything. After a while as he got older he realized he would never he will never become the ideal American but he still continued to use remedies to look like an American.
