Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page DasBender, Gita. “Critical Thinking in College Writing: From the Personal to the Academic.” Https://Wac.colostate.edu, 2011, wac.colostate.edu/books/writingspaces2/dasbender–critical-thinking.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words A critical thinker is someone who is a good reader, along with keeping an open mind and thinking about new ideas. Critical thinkers also think about what he/she is reading, not just look at the text. Along with thinking about what you are reading, you must understand key terms and be able to use quotations correctly. Then comes Academic writing which as stated in the article comes from “personal writing”. After that comes writing an essay, after you have taken good notes, and understand the text you are ready. During your essay you want to model yourself after a good writer to receive an A grade.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Critical Thinker – Someone who formulates new ideas about a text that he is reading.

Stalk your Calling – Pursue what you want to do in life and let nothing stop you from being where you want to be.

Ann John’s article is about communities and how we belong to many different communities even if you have different views than your community. We join communities that share similar interests. One community is Athletes. From there, many small groups or clubs make up that community. Such as Football players, or Wrestlers, Basketball players, and so on. Within this community not all Athletes will agree what is the best sport, but they share a common interest in that being in a sport is enjoyable. Not just Athletes join these communities of shared interests. Academic communities exist as well. Many people who study in the same academic field create communities. These communities create their own text which is used to express ideas within their respective communities. Throughout the Academic community there are many different groups that study within their field. Like Scientists, Lawyers, Authors, and Engineers. The smaller groups of these communities, share similar political, social, and religious beliefs. Some of the Communities that I belong to are Greek Life, Undergrad, Car Community, Tennessean, and Engineering Majors. The smaller groups are Phi Kappa Tau, Class of 2024, Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), Middle Tennessee, Civil Engineer Major.

Better Conversation

To truly listen to a person you must follow ten simple rules. First do not multitask  and give the conversation full attention. Don’t be half in the conversation, be completely focused on the conversation. If not just leave the conversation. Second don’t pontificate let there be a response to your statement. Assume you have something to learn when interesting the conversation. Third use open ended questions to receive a good response. Fourth go with the flow, don’t get bogged down with a question you came up earlier in the conversation. Five if you do not know then just admit that you do not know. Six don’t equate experiences there no the same it’s never the same. Seven try not to repeat yourself it’s condescending. Eight stay out of the weed people don’t care. They want to know about you. Nine the most important listen. Talking puts you in control, but listening will gain your knowledge. Ten and the final rule be brief. People live in a busy world. Keep your mind open and you will be amazed.

\

The two points that would be most useful in my mind would be the third rule and the eight. I find myself not asking very good questions and receiving very short responses. Also rule eight I need to follow a lot more I find myself going into the woods past the weeds. I need to keep focused on the big picture and the main details.

Rhetorical Situations

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Grant-Davis, Keith. “Rhetorical Situations and The Constituents.” Jstor.org , 1997, www.jstor.org/stable/465644 .

I don’t think it really connects to anything we have read but perhaps it connects to  What The Eyes Don’t See.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. What are some famous Rhetorical Situations that I may know?

Finding a good argument

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Jones, Rebecca. “Finding the Good Argument OR Why Bother With Logic?” Http://Writingspaces.org, writingspaces.org/sites/default/files/jones–finding-the-good-argument.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words This article talks about how arguments have turned into warfare. That today when people are in arguments we use tactics like in war. We don’t appeal to Logos, Pathos, or Ethos but rather personal attacks. It also talked about how today we dont come to a compromise. That we see it as defeat. When the Greeks debated compromise was a common occurrence that it was not a personal matter. Where today we take everything against our point as a threat. The article also talks about how non violent people pushed their agenda in their arguments with sticking to the point and not getting caught up in personal attacks.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Ethos- is talking to your audience about your subject.

Pathos- To connect to your audience by emotionally appealing to them.

Logos –  Is a logical point for your argument.

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

It could connect to our mother tongue by the way our parents convinced us as children to do something. So from then on that’s how we try to convince people.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Is there a missing word in the list of three above like one that goes along with fear.

ACE Blog Post

Growing Adverse Childhood Experiences are traumatic events in a child’s life. This includes drugs, physical and verbal abuse, as well as growing up with a family member who has mental health issues. Toxic stress from these problems can cause mental disorders as well as other health problems. Adverstys like poverty, racism, and violence can have tremendous effects later in a child’s life. Poverty will limit a child’s resources and make it difficult for a child to succeed in school. Racism in a child’s life is very dangerous it causes hate for no reason. One child will spread hate like a disease. Violence will cause a child to grow up scared or extreme aggressive which neither is good in the long run. ACEs would affect literacy by children not being able to write and read properly. Also they may not want to go through the struggle of learning to read and write because their life is a struggle.

Dr.Mona blogpost

I think Doctor Mona has done a tremendous amount of research and work. She saved countless lives from lead poisoning. Flint is already a struggling city since GM pulled out in the 1980’s. The city has enough problems without poisonous water coming from their pipes. Which they pay one of the highest water bills in the country for lead contaminated water. I personally have not brought attention or change to a subject as big or important as the Flint water crisis. However I have helped with volunteer work in my community and in neighboring communities. Me as an individual can only be limited by myself for what I can do. Many people have achieved great things by themselves by being motivated and ready for the challenge. I currently am not passionate about anything enough to try to make a change. However there are some things I can do to make this place safer. I could volunteer again. I could also recycle and help other students when they are down. There are many things that I can do to help make the world a better place.

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Murray, Donald. “The Maker’s Eye.” Nabuckler.files.wordpress.com, jamespaulgee.com/pdfs/Gee What is Literacy.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words This article talks about how a beginning  writer reads over his paper and how an experienced writer reads over his paper. It tells how experienced writers see it as a first step to start writing and how beginning writers see it as a big step. Writers must also be able to handle criticism that this will only make their piece better than before. This is hard for many writers due to their ego and that these stories are self reflections of themselves.Experienced writers also don’t check line by line they check to see if all the lines flow together to form their idea.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Typographical – relating to the style, appearance, or production of printed matter.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

It connects with Mother tongue, and A lesson from the Amish about how writing is a way to express your idea and the way you wish people to view it.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. What is the hardest part of writing for you?

What is Literacy to you Blog Post

1)  Literacy to me is the way I read and understand text. Whether it be throwing pictures or motions anyway I can understand the message being communicated to me.

2) My parents I would say are some of my biggest Literacy sponsors, also my older brother.

3)My story like Fishman’s started in elementary school probably in the third grade when I found a couple of books that I actually enjoyed reading. So as any parent does my Mom bought me some books from the same author and I began spending more and more time reading. Then I stopped reading. I don’t quite remember why but I just did not enjoy it. I was struggling in school. I couldn’t write very well and my reading had gone down hill significantly after that. It was a hard time for many years. I had to go to places during the summers to help improve my skills in both reading and writing. Throughout middle school I had to rely on help from my Mom and Brother who would spend hours with me helping with writing assignments. I only started to be able to write on my own by about 8th or 9th grade. When I got to high school there was a big push to improve my reading and writing skills, which I believe I have tremendously improved. Through it all I had a loving family that spent a great deal of time and money to help me.
