Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words  In this article Fisherman is trying to imply the importance of parents when it comes to children’s literacy.  She includes a story from her past to help emphasize the importance of the lesson she is trying to teach the readers. According to Fisherman, parents teach kids literacy at a young age. They also are controlling what the children read so that’s a big role as a parent for the child. In the Amish community it is very had to become understand literacy because the parents limit what children can read. Fisherman overcame those challenges and started to understand literacy despite being Amish. 
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. 

 

 Counterproductive- having the opposite of a desired effect.  

“…mainstream educators is not valued by the Amish because of its potentially counterproductive or destructive power. 

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research? 

  

This reading is similar to all the articles we have read in class because they all have the main idea of literacy and all show how there are many things that influence it.  
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion.  Do you think where you grew up also has an impact on the way you understand literacy?
