Rhetorical Analysis

https://twitter.com/RAMRANTS/status/930065838387863552?s=20

This statement which turned into a thread, was posted on twitter by Richard Armande Mills, a conservitive who works with Turning Point USA. Mill’s organization helps introduce students to the aspects of freedom, free market, and limited government. His goal is to try to get students to understand these aspects and maybe even try to get them to believe what this organization believes. This thread which was posted by Mills shows that Mills believes that Joe Biden is an “open sexual predator.” By posting this tweet Mills wants others to bring light on the situation of Joe Biden and what he is actually doing. This thread of tweets has a rhetorical appeal to ethos, pathos, and logos.

In this thread of tweets it is very obvious that this situation has a rhetorical appeal to ethos. Mill’s purpose of this thread is to help show people that Biden is not a good person like everyone thinks he is. He is trying to change people’s views on Biden by showing them his true character. Mills uses videos to prove his beliefs. All of his videos come from reliable sources like the news and other live footage from when these events have taken place. This shows that the sources used by Mills are credible because every video is live and they can’t change live footage.

These threads of tweets also have a rhetorical appeal to pathos. Pathos is the use of emotions and affect to persuade. As you can tell in this thread that this is one of Mill’s main ways of proving his point. He uses the videos to provoke an emotional response which also allows the viewers to have compassion towards the topic. Mills also uses descriptive details in summarizing what is happening in the videos, which allows the audience to understand what is actually happening. The videos also show Biden grabbing and holding the children in inappropriate ways. Mill’s hope for this thread is to persuade the viewers to see the truth about what Biden is actually doing while using ethos.

The rhetorical appeal of logos is also shown in this thread of tweets. Logos are shown by the descriptions of the videos. At the top of the videos Mills writes what is happening in the videos which shows why he believes that Biden is an open sexual predator. The videos also are objective reports so this brings credit to his beliefs. This is how the logic and reasoning of Mill’s thinking is shown.

Mills has shown a use of all the rhetorical appeals in his thread. He has used credibility, emotional appeals, and other aspects to show what he believes and why he believes it. Although this topic is very controversial and could have many different views on it, he did a good job in showing why he feels this way and what made him feel this way.

Reading Journal Grant-Davie

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Grant-Davie, Keith. “Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents.” Rhetorical Review, Vol. 15, No. 2, 1997, 17.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In this article Grant-Davie suggests the steps that writers should take to analyze the rhetorical situations to understand why it is necessary. The author also explains that the writer should first learn what discourse is and incorporate it into their work, which will then allow the writer to understand the rhetorical situation better, which will help the writer’s work. The author also suggests the writer needs to work within the constraints of the rhetorical situation. This will allow the writer and also the reader to understand the concept of the writing and will allow them to connect to it more.

Blog Post- Reading Journal for Jones

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Jones, Rebecca. “Finding the good argument or why bother with logic?” 2010, 25.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In this article Jones refers to the metaphor used for argument is war. The concepts we use in arguing are also many of the same concepts used in the structure of war. Jones also refers to the last major debate in 2008 which lowered the standards of argumentation. Many of the arguments people have are related, but they are different issues with different premises. I agree with Jones when it comes to this because many of the arguments I have seen relate to this circumstance, especially presidential debates. I also think the word “war” is a very good representation for arguments. Argument is war.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Masquerading- pass off as something else.

“… rather that the discussions they offer masquerading as arguments are often merely opinions or a spin on a particular topic and not carefully considered, quality arguments.”

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This article is different from our other readings because we have not read about arguments. But this article does relate to my own research because I have also noticed arguments are war. You are fighting against someone else for what you believe is right.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Do you think arguments are always war?

ACE blog post

  1. A adverse childhood experience (ACE) is a type of trauma that a child goes through in or out of the home environment. Toxic stress explains how that piece of trauma effects the child and triggers biological reactions that can lead to negative or bad outcomes.
  2. Poverty, racism, and violence can heavily impact a child’s development. Most people in poverty can not afford or don’t have access to the education the children need so their development is a lot slower than most other children. Race impacts a child’s development socially because many people seem to believe the stereotypes of race and then they tend to treat them differently based on their race. Violence affects children’s development because if they go through physical or emotional violence it takes a negative toll on their psychological aspect of their minds.
  3. Adverse childhood experiences affects literacy because some children are not able to have the access other children do which means they are not able to learn everything they need to learn. Some other ACE examples also affect literacy because it takes a toll on the children’s mind which can affect the ability to learn.

Blog Post What The Eyes Don’t See

  1. Dr. Mona’s actions made a big difference in the community of Flint. She was the person who allowed the the crisis to become known to the public. She also made the crisis reach national news which helped Flint get the money needed to fix the problem.
  2. Yes, there has been many circumstances where I have had to inform other people about a problem they weren’t aware of. For instance, I got invited to go on a ski trip. My mother and I started looking at all the information and details of the trip, and then I realized we we had already planned a trip to Indiana at the same time. I had to tell my mother because she was not aware of the situation.
  3. There are many things you can do to make the world a better and safer place. If you see someone who is doing harm to the world you should report it. Also if you see people littering you should confront them and tell them it it is wrong.

Murray Blog

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Murray, Donald. “The Maker’s Eye.” 4.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In the article Donald states that every writing needs to have multiple drafts. When you have multiple drafts it makes your writing stronger. The purpose of writing drafts is to revise your writing each time to make it better. There are also other ways to revise your writing in the drafts.  The people writing the papers can get peers to review their work and break their papers down into multiple sections. The writers also should not be harsh on themselves because that can make their papers worse . I agree with the statement that states that many kids “write one rough draft and think their paper is done.” I tend to do that sometimes too.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Capacity- maximum number something can produce.

“mostly because they have the capacity and experience to create and review a large number of invisible drafts in their minds before they get to the page.”

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This article connects to my own research because I also believe that there should be multiple rough drafts when it comes to writing essays.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. How many times do you think you should re-read the paper you are writing?

Blog Post Questions

  1. To me literacy is how people write and read in their own ways.
  2. My mom is one of my sponsors of literacy.
  3. Ever since I was a baby, I have always grown up going to church. We would go as a family every Sunday and it became apart of our weekly routine. As a child my mother would read me a book every night before I would go to bed. Some nights they would be christian books and other nights they would just be regular children books. After I would get out of the bath we would get ready for bed and read a book right before I was about to go to sleep. I always had a shelf in my room and my mom would always let me pick which book I wanted but she always said “we have to finish this book before we can start reading another one.” Sometimes after we would read the christian books she would ask me what I learned from the book which would help me understand the lesson the book was trying to give the reader, even if they were children books. Eventually after many years of bedtime stories, we ended that tradition when I got older. I think those stories had a strong impact on me and the way I learn. It also helped my literacy skills grow more.

Reading journal for Fisherman

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page  Fisherman, Andrea. “Literacy and Cultural Context: A Lesson from the Amish.” Language Arts, Volume 64, Number 8, 1987, 854
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words  In this article Fisherman is trying to imply the importance of parents when it comes to children’s literacy.  She includes a story from her past to help emphasize the importance of the lesson she is trying to teach the readers. According to Fisherman, parents teach kids literacy at a young age. They also are controlling what the children read so that’s a big role as a parent for the child. In the Amish community it is very had to become understand literacy because the parents limit what children can read. Fisherman overcame those challenges and started to understand literacy despite being Amish.
