Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words | In this article Fishman uses a little boy named Eli Jr. to show us how his community and their definition of literacy is different from our own. His parents use literacy not as a tool to actually acquire knowledge, but uses it as a way to understand their culture and how they are supposed to live and take care of themselves. The material that they read are very much essential to their community, but to us they are not. They read articles in the newspaper that teach them how to make their own food. Fishman shows how literacy has a completely different meaning for the people living in the amish community, and that reading is not just for fun or pleasure, but it is essential for their way of life. In contrast, in our community literacy and reading is for education purposes and is also fundamental. |

In other articles we have read we understand that we all have a literacy sponsor, someone who introduces us to literacy in any way shape or form, and this person helped influence the way we see literacy, and in this article the younger son is influenced by his parents and his community and the way he sees literacy is for essential purposes rather than fundamental, and since he is so young he will grow up to view literacy in this way |
