Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Brandt, Deborah. “Sponsors Of Literacy.” Comphacker, May 1998, comphacker.org/pdfs/632/Brandt.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In this article Brandt discusses the importance of literacy today. Over time it has become easier for a human to explain and depict what they heard, saw or experienced, and this is because of the evolution of our literacy. Literacy has developed economically and personally for everyone. There has  become a competition to harness literacy over time. Brandt explains about a girl named Dora Lopez who was a Mexican-American. When Dora was a child she decided to teach herself to read. She attended a University. Dora had a sponsorship although it wasn’t a very strong sponsorship it was still very useful for her. Eventually Dora’s bilitterate skills allowed her to become very successful. Sponsorships allow you to be able to pull literacy tendencies from a multitude of groups to advance your writing.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. “Unionism” (Brandt 177) Unionism is the policies and practices of a laber union.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

I connected this reading to Elbow because in this article they talked about how literacy has advanced and in Elbow’s article it is about how language in education has advanced.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. With the evolution of literacy will our language continue to become more difficult as technology continues or will it become easier because of the advancements in technology?

Peer Group Resume

  1. I am Ethan Young, I am from Denver, Colorado. I like to ski and hang out with friends. In terms of writing I would say my best quality is creating a good flow in my writing, one thing I would like to work on is my creativity.
  2.  With my peer group I would want to have a solid support group who is honest and provides constructive criticism to further better my writing ability. I would prefer decently frequent communication on assignments upcoming and other things in class.
  3.  I am not a huge Harry Potter fan although I would say I belong in Gryffindor.
  4.  eayoung4@go.olemiss.edu
  5. I would not choose option 2 for the A grade.

Blog Post

After reading  “Sometimes The ‘Tough Teen’ Is Quietly Writing Stories”  I acknowledged  the privilege  that I had for the education I have received. There are hundreds of thousands of kids similar to Joshua who unfortunately experience the same thing. When kids our put in situations like this and told they aren’t intelligent they become shy to their emotions. Growing up in a middle to higher class neighborhood I feel I received superb educational resources which have allowed me to continue my education at the University level. The students in the working class need to be able to feel accepted to express their pieces of work and let their talent shine, but the stigma around it suppresses their ability to create.

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Elbow, Peter. “Ting the Mother Tongue:Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond ‘Mistakes,” ‘Bad English,” and ‘Wrong Language.’” JAC Online Journal, www.jaconlinejournal.com/archives/vol19.3/elbow-inviting.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words The author Peter Elbow expresses his emotion on the current state of language in education, he believes we are too set on what’s correct language and what is perceived as incorrect language. Elbow uses the term ‘mother tongue’ throughout the length of the article in order to explain how no language should be considered wrong or be frowned upon because the way the  ‘mother tongue communicates  is not our standard written language. Elbow describes how words and descriptions which come more naturally when we are speaking can often be incorrect for standard written english, which would be perceived as incorrect. Once you accept the fact that your everyday dialect is not inferior and see yourself as smart, you will be able to write without resentment.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. to keep it from being misused, debased, corrupted. No wonder we hear strong calls for “English Only.”  (Elbow 361) The term debased is a new term to me, the way Elbow used it in this sentence allows me to understand the meaning. Debased is a synonym of degrade; which means to reduce something that may have value.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

The reading connects with my research I did in History in high school about the development of language. Over time our language has become more and more complex and we have advanced so much we consider our “mother tongue” sometimes incorrect when we are in formal situations.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Do different generations have different versions of SWE or has it consistently developed through all age ranges.

FASTrack/Writ 101 Round Table

Throughout the podcast I heard many useful pieces of advice. The 2 that I found really beneficial were: figure out how to budget your time and create a schedule to get work, social events and studying done. I think this was useful because if I give myself enough time to study and complete my online work I will be capable of making good grades and budgeting to be able to do other social activities. The other piece of advice that I found useful is take advantage of events and activities to meet people. This one was important for me because I came to college not knowing anyone else coming here. I am looking forward to finally having the college experience, I am very excited for one thing in specific and that is having a lot more freedom and responsibilities. I am dreading the fact that the majority of classes will be delivered online because it could be very easy to forget about an assignment when learning online. My advice I would give to incoming seniors would be to be flexible and gracious with the situations you may be faced with in these uncertain times. Do not get bogged down with the current environment of learning but learn how to gain from it to make it your best year yet.
