ACE blog

What are adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and toxic stresses? How can adversities like poverty, racism, and violence impact a child’s development? How might ACEs affect literacy?

These are experiences children have such as physical, emotional abuse, neglect, caregiver mental illness, and household violence. These things can affect the children because with these it creates an unnatural wear and tear on a child and long years of exposure to this will create long lasting effects on these children. With this amount of exposure to the stress it creates a stressful environment that our bodies and brains were not built for. These situations will definitely affect the literacy in a child because with stress our bodies either shut down or start to react in a bad way. And when this happens people don’t know what to do so they stop trying to make themselves feel better because they don’t feel like they deserve to feel better.

Reading Journal for Murray

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page “The Maker’s Eye” by Donald Murray 4
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words This is an article that talks about the lessons we learn as we write papers. No matter how many times you sit there and edit it it will always seem off. Never will you be able to sit there and read your own writing and know that it is completely finished. You are able to sit there and know that you put more than 100% of yourself into that paper. But still in the end it won’t be good enough.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. The writer must be sure of his dimensions. This means that there should be something more than structure and development, that there should be a pleasing proportion among all of the parts. I cannot decide on a dimension without seeing all of the parts of writing together. I examine each section of the writing in its relationship to all of the other sections.”

Literacy Blog

What is literacy to you? Who’s one of your Sponsors of Literacy? Write a scene with this Sponsor of Literacy like Fishman did in her piece.

To me literacy is something that allowed people to break free from most rules and become creative. And have freedom that most things don’t allow us to have because there are restrictions and rules. I have never really thought about who my Sponsor of Literacy would be but now thinking about it, it would definitely have to be my Grandma. I have always looked up to her in so many ways and one was her ability to be so creative. I always have ideas about things or stories but I am never able to really get them out of my head. But growing up she always was able to sit there and really open my mind up to what I could possibly do with all of that. And I know now how to do so, and I am able to get even more creative when it comes to writing papers or even in the small essay questions of possibility.

Reading Journal for Gee

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Andrea R. Fishman “Literacy and Cultural Context: A Lesson from the Amish” Language Arts , December 1987, Vol. 64, No. 8, The Social Aspects of Language

and Learning (December 1987), pp. 842-854 National Council of Teachers of English

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words This is an article that talks about the lessons we can learn from the Amish. And we see that there are very different ideas between the things we learn and what they do. And how that affects the writing that comes out of our societies.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. I couldn’t really find any “new” terms but there were definitely quite a few words that had a tad bit of a different meaning then what I thought they did.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

It kind of relates to the previous blog we made about the ethnic views on things.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. When people stopped what they were doing to listen to Eli Sr. was Eli doing it on purpose or did he just catch everyone’s attention randomly?

Reading Journal for Brandt

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Deborah Brandt. “Sponsors of Literacy” PDF, CCC 49,1988, 21.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words This article talks about the breakdown of what Ms. Brandt refers to “Sponsors of Literacy” and how they have and will affect the future of literature. While I was reading it, I was really interested to see how exactly she was going to explain how literacy was a connection to the individual development and then how it was also an economic development.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Sponsors seemed a fitting term for the figures who turned up most typically in people’s memories of literacy learning: older relatives, teachers, priests, supervisors, military officers, editors, influential authors.”

When I first saw this word I automatically thought about money. Like the sponsors people get to publicize themselves in the acting/sports etc. world. So although this word isn’t necessarily new to me this meaning was a new one.

This article is related to the podcast that we listened to from the author Deborah Brandt.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. How are people supposed to know the connection between the author and the sponsor if just the name is mentioned?

“Kimberly Yam’s Twitter Thread”

While reading this Twitter Thread it really made me think about when I was younger. And how I really didn’t like being the race I was. I went to a primarily Hispanic school and so I was actually bullied for being white. And so I always was ashamed of it. But then I met one of my closest friends and we both overcame that thought. And now I could not be prouder of who I am and what race I am. I really enjoy learning more about my ancestry because they came over during the Hollocaust and even went through Ellis Island.

“Podcast Round Table Reflection.”

Listening to this podcast has really allowed me to sit back and think about my life and what I need to focus on while I come into my freshman year of college. One thing that I really thought was helpful was when they talked about always making friends with those around you in the class and making sure your professor gets to know you. If you can do these things the class will be a whole lot easier because you will be able to feel comfortable asking for help. And know that you will always have a friend or even the professor to assist you in whatever you need to succeed. I am really looking forward to seeing my writing skills improve throughout the year and also hopefully meet new people that will be in my class. One thing though I am not really excited to have to do is peer review. I am always super scared that when I correct someone they are going to take it wrong and not like me.
