ACE’s & Toxic Stresses

Traumatic events that occur in childhood, include violence, abuse, and growing up in a family with mental health or substance use problems. Toxic stress from traumatic experiences can change brain development and affect how the body responds to stress.

Toxic stresses like poverty, racism and violence can impact development severely in a number of different ways including future drug or alcohol dependency, unfit manners of aggression and possible mental and physical health problems. Sometimes a social problem is developed which can lead to a state of depression and loneliness.

An adverse childhood experience and/or a traumatic experience at a young age can be critical to learning and education progression through many ways. An attention deficit may be developed which is critical for ensuring a well rounded education and learning style placing them at significant risk for poor school achievement, which in turn is associated with poor health.
