Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words

The main goal that is expressed in the article is to expand the readers’ definition of what a genre is. They help us grasp this concept as a tool and something that can be used to help someone get things done. I am very interested in the past articles and how informative they are. It is almost as if I am being enlightened on things and subjects I never really thought of before. The concept of how a genre is something we can and most likely have participated in is somewhat unique. We aren’t even aware of it, yet we are still partaking in it. Overall it is a fantastic article that I enjoyed reading.

Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Genres- a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature

Sweepstakes-a form of gambling, especially on horse races, in which all the stakes are divided among the winners

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

The only connection I could make between this article and the other is the idea of it being involved in our writing. Which is not an unusual connection because they are based on writing articles.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. What are some genres have you partaken in today?

  • Could be comedy, romance, or even a horror dating story!

Critical Thinking Assessment Reflection

In terms of the critical assessment, I think it made me realize more about myself as a writer in terms of argumentative writing and writing that includes additional sources. With my writing at first, I would argue my point with strong, credible sources but would lack in other areas. I would also avoid including a counterargument that would hurt my paper more than it would help. In terms of this assessment, it helps to remind me that my skills have developed as a writer and that I need to continue to grow and take advantage of these new skills I have obtained in my many years. Overall this assessment help me learn and remember more about myself as a writer.

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In regards to the article I read, I thought it was quite entertaining. I think it is funny how we focus on including critical thinking in our writing, but we do not focus on the concept of critical writing and what it is. I would say my reaction toward this was surprisingly good. I was intrigued and curious about what had to be said. I like how it was just there to inform but also to help. This can be seen when steps on how to be a profound thinker and writer were provided. Then the last thing that I saw and thoroughly enjoyed the combination process of how we have to acknowledge the inward approach and our own thoughts along with the outward!

Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Impersonal writing -focusing on the subject than the person themselves

Critical thinking-disciplined process of analysis and making sense of a given concept

Counter intuitive- going against what you should be doing or certain expectations

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

The only connection between this article and the other one we have read is that the writing within it requires some critical thinking and processing to get its points across.

Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. What are some things we should avoid doing when critically thinking or writing within our papers or article responses?

Hint- Have a biased thought process.

Discourse Communities Reflection

While reading about the discourse communities, I mostly obtained a definition of what it is and looks like. With discourse, communities are initially where a group of people shares a common interest and idea of expectations, participation, and ways of expression. Then you have the concept of communities of practice. This is when a group of complex people shares a way of being that may be different compared to other organizations. I think these definitions were explained with a verbal representation of what these communities could potentially look like and involve. When it comes to the groups that I involve myself in, they vary. I am a part of the swimming community, and I have been for the past 12 years. I am a part of the black circle that involves people that look at me and have potentially had similar experiences. I have also named myself as a part of the wannabe makeup guru organization. It’s just a place to grow and develop my skills in terms of makeup. I am a member of those who have experience living in a single-parent household. While many people could live in these circumstances, the reasons may vary! Then lastly, I am in the community of being a Christan. My faith has become something fundamental to me during my time in quarantine, which I am very aware and appreciative of.

Exercise 1: Free Writing

I think since my roomate Nadia will not listen to my boy drama I will just share it here. First of all I have no desire to truly be in a relationship, one because there is no reason to be tied down right now. Most importantly the idea of a relationship is scary because boys or at least the ones I have dealt with are far from sane. Now getting into the drama can anyone imagine breaking up with someone and you think you are finally free from an unhealthy relationship. Then boom you find out they are now going to the same college as you. This was really a shock because you believed that they weren’t going to go to college and they decided to work for the family business. Of course I had a moment of riding on my high horse and thinking well maybe they came and followed me. I thought this until I see his other ex here who I use to be friends with that also said that they think he came here for them. Like is this the land of my ex and my ex’s ex’s. It was just baffling and of course I told myself I would not associate them and I was gonna focus on me. You already know this didn’t last. You would think after this boy has called me a dog that can’t be trained, a person who would ruin his reputation because of race and much more would be nothing to me. Well I thought so to but he has a way of convincing you he is going to be better and do better. Then next think you know he is back to his old bullying ways. While the isn’t the best circumstances I am hopeful I will work up the courage to walk away for the tenth time.
