Sponsors of Literacy Reading Journal

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page “Sponsors of Literacy”

Brandt, D. (1998). Sponsors of Literacy. College Composition and Communication, 49(2), 165. doi:10.2307/358929

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In this article Deborah Brandt is describing the importance of literacy in the modern world today. Brandt uses the word “sponsors” to describe the agents that teach, model, and regulate literacy. Brandt discovered these sponsors through interviews with people talking about their own memories of when they were learning to read and write. Another point Brandt makes in this article is the importance of literacy. Brandt describes people learning literacy in the same way she explains why Little Leaguers sponsor a local insurance agency because we learn literacy to expand the things we can do and Little Leaguers were the patch to play baseball. Brandt also says that literacy is a valued commodity than can lead to financial success if used in the right way.

This article can relate to the previous article we read because we have to learn how to be literate in our mother tongue as well as our SWE

Sometimes a “Tough Teen” is Quietly Writing Stories

Every single person on this planet is very different. I personally have been blessed to have parents that have jobs that support and give me the opportunity to have a good background in education. As an upper-middle class white eighteen year old I do not have the same struggles as others. I am blessed to have never had to worry about paying for school supplies or clothes to wear to school. Unlike Joshua in the article I have never been held back. I was not born in jail. I have never felt like an outcast that Joshua felt like. And that does not mean that I have no background that helps me write but that’s wrong. I am just the complete opposite of Joshua. We each live different lives that support and give us ideas on our writing.

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes,” “Bad Mistakes,” and “Wrong Language”

Elbow, P. (n.d.). Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes,” “Bad English,” and “Wrong Language”.

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In summarization this article is about the correlation between students, their teachers, and the students mother tongue. In the article Elbow talks about how students tend to feel less smart because the teachers do not accept their mother tongue as correct. The teachers see Standard Written Language as the correct way to write papers and some do not accept any other way. Peter Elbow says “ The two goals are: safety in the classroom with the mother tongue and to produce correct SWE.” Elbow emphasizes in this article that SWE is not anyone’s mother tongue. My thoughts on this are that I agree with Elbow’s statement in that it is the teachers goal to teach students the correct way to write instead of putting the student down and making them feel discouraged because their mother tongue is not accepted

Dialect – A students dialect is their mother tongue and is not accepted by most writing teachers

I have not really had any research on similar articles from previous classes

FAStrack/Writing 101 Roundtable

School is a very stressful task for people. If you do not manage your time and prioritize the more important things you will not succeed. And that is the scary thing about college. I just moved out of my house and I am on my own. I do not have my parents right beside me making sure I do all my school work on time. And if I am being honest being on my own is the best feeling ever. Yes, I miss my parents, my house, my dogs; or I could also say my safe place and comfort. As being human though that thought scares me. The pieces of advice that I am reflecting on is that putting yourself out there. I left my hometown with all my friends to meet new people. And it is not just making new friends and having fun. The podcast also said to make the connections with your professors. Making sure to ask them questions when you actually need their help. The other piece of advice would be to stay on task with all of my assignments. The last thing I need to be is behind. One of the people in the podcast said to make sure to do all of your daily assignments to stay on task. Someone also said to get a planner and write it all down.

The thing I most look forward to this year is the new beginnings. I finally moved out of my small hometown and so I am excited about meeting people and making the connections with people that will be able to help me out later in life. The thing I am least looking forward to this year is the feeling that I might take advantage of this freedom and not succeed in school and possibly disappoint my family.

Some advice I would give to a 9th grader is to make sure to not wish time away. I would also say to make sure you take your school work seriously but also make sure to have fun in high school because you only get it once. I would also say to make sure to try new things. Find the thing that makes you happy when you do it and stick to it.
