Gee What is Literacy Reading Journal

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page  Gee What is Literacy
“Gee What Us Literacy .” JOURNAL OF EDUCATION, by Thomas Williams Bicknell et al., 1st ed., vol. 171, Boston University, School of Education, 1989, pp. 18–23.

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words  The article to me, as one was about discourses. I learned there are two different types and that they have something to do with reading. The types of readings mentioned were more or less about learning new languages. The passage did start off talking about linguist, which are people I perceive to speak different languages, but not in a way that a translator would. I thought the article was a little hard to understand. The viewpoints were all over the place and it talked about several things that did not seem to connect. I could say that I learned what literacy is and I guess different ways it could be used.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author.

Discourse- a socially accepted association among ways of using language.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

I think this article does connect to previous ones because it is talking about literacy, which is one of the prime things we have been learning in class.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion.   Why is the article very scatter-brained? Unorganized.

Peer Group Resume

My name is Jadyn Nash and I’m from Clinton, Ms. I am an okay writer that is good at organization, and I would like to work on punctuation and grammar. In a peer group, I would like to have someone read my work and give me any kind of critiques on how to make my writing better, or a way to say something better. I’m comfortable communicating on a set schedule that works best with everyone’s time. I have no clue of my Hogwarts house, never seen Harry Potter 🙁. My preferred email is jnash1@go.olemiss.edu. I will be choosing the “A-Grade!

Brandt Reading Journal

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page  Sponsors of Literacy

Brandt, Deborah. “Sponsors of Literacy.” College Composition and Communication, vol. 49, no. 2, 1998, pp. 165–173., doi:10.2307/358929.

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words  This article is describing the importance of literacy and how who sponsors you play a huge part in it. The article does a great job of explaining sponsorship and gives great examples as well. The author gives the reader great evidence of the pros and cons of sponsorship. The reader gets a clear, concise view that sponsorship is not a thing that is “Perfect” but more of a sort of gain. The examples give two different points of views. The author talks about different people with differing lifestyles and somehow connect. Then she continues to explain how sponsorship makes one person’s life easier, or even making it about a money thing and how of course the person with money stays on track and the poorer person life sways into a different lane.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author.

A focus on sponsorship can force a more explicit and substantive link between literacy learning and systems of opportunity and access. A statistical correlation between high literacy achievements and high socioeconomic, majority- race status routinely shows up in results of national test of reading and wring performance
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

I have never done research on a topic like this, but it does make me want to look more into it. The examples however, I could correlate to more than anything because it drew a big picture that I think is so true in society.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion.   Why is sponsorship and literacy a correlation to begin with?

#1000BlackGirlBooks Reflection

I honestly can say that there has not been a big barrier in my life that has altered me from learning to read or write. However, the closest one would most likely be race. I know that my race does threaten people and some do not like me because of the color of my skin. I could mostly relate to 1000 Black Girl Books. There are not many books that feature a strong black female. Growing up I can honestly say I read Junie B. Jones or the Fancy Nancy. Even after I grew older, my joy to read decreased and I was only subjected to read what was required for school. I can recall from ninth grade to the present, that I have not read a book with a black lead whether it was male or female for school. I think schools generally do not think about things like this nor do they care to have a wider variety of authors and characters in their curriculum. Everything school-based is very narrowminded and I can say that not having a wider range of authors to read from has altered the way I think. As I have grown older, I have been able to open my eyes and enjoy books by authors that resemble me or characters that relate to me.

FASTrack/ Round Table Talk

The two pieces of advice that stuck with me was to not take these memories for granted and to NOT procrastinate. The memories thing stuck with me because college is such a new experience and with everything going on in society, I feel I have to think more in the now than the later. Although everything is very unfortunate, it is good to still be able to make these memories even though life is not normal. The second piece of advice is to not procrastinate. In high school I procrastinated a lot. I can honestly say I procrastinated the assignments that is due tonight because its a habit. One thing for me in college is to get better at doing my work now rather than later and to just not think about it. I hate that I procrastinate, but it is not as bad to where I don’t get my assignments turned in, They may just be really close to to the due date. This year I am most looking forward to the new relationships I will make and just having fun/ making memories. College is a new ball game and i’m very excited to be here and just away from home and adulting. However, I am not excited for the mask. The mask really do make it hard to breathe, and they are not fashionable. However, I do know that they are required and it is also a safety requirement for not only myself, but for others. lastly, the advice I would give a ninth grader would be to ride the wave, but realize what’s real and fake. Growing up I wish I had this advice because as a new high schooler it is very important to make memories through all 4 years, and in someway it it like being in college, but without the added responsibilities. However, I wish someone was there to tell me not everybody is my friend, or to watch out for people who use each other for selfish gain. I think that’s great advice because high school could easily become the best or worse years of a persons life, and to already have the set knowledge of “everyone is not your friend” could hugely impact in which direction a ninth grader takes in high school.

Reading Journal

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page  Inviting the Mother tongue: Beyond “Mistakes,” “Bad English,” and “Wrong Language.” Elbow, Peter. “Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes,” “Bad English”, and “Wrong Language””. The Journal of Advanced Composition (1999).
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words  The as a whole was about new and emerging writing students. It is supposed to describe slight turmoil with learning to write and just all things surrounded with writing.  My reaction I can say is I agree with the article in some aspects. I think there is some truths within the article, however not everything is justified.

“the New concept of writing teachers feeling the struggles o0f goals and obligations.” That was something that really shocked me.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

I think this reading is somewhat accurate, based on my own findings, but there could be more improvement.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion.   What is a way that people could make thier writing as comfortable as if they were speaking?
