In this article, the author begins by saying how citizens of literacy loom economies have flourished in the sense of their reading and writing skills during the 20th century, but vulnerable because the form of literacy changes with every new generation of learners. It then goes on to say that the use of sponsors might not be a solution to fix the problem but can connect literacy to individual development. These sponsors act as someone that is most frequent in someone’s memory of learning literacy throughout their life (teachers, priests, parents, classmates, etc). She then goes onto relating this to sponsors throughout history. For example, how Baptist and Methodist ministers (sponsors) taught enslaved African Americans to understand the Bible. For the remainder of the article, she looks into the sponsoring of literacy and studies how individuals of different lifestyles have connected to literacy through the people present in their lives.

Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author.

In the article Deborah Brandt talks about Raymond Branches connection to literacy saying, “There lies a thick and, to him, relatively accessible economy of institutional and commercial supports that cultivated and subsidized his acquisition of a powerful form of literacy” (Brandt 171).  Through context clues I can infer that the word acquisition means to obtain something because his advantages in schooling cultured him and supported his finding of a power form of literacy. Thus those two advantages caused him to obtain or acquisition a powerful form of literacy.

I asked my friends the meaning of that word and they looked at me cross eyed because it apparently is an easy word, but I didn’t know what it meant.

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This connects to Marley Dias’ YouTube video because she talks about how her parents have caused her to love to read. This being an example of how your sponsors can contribute to developing literacy, which in her case her parents did. This further created a ripple effect for her to act as a sponsor and cause more kids to become familiar with literacy through books.

Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion.

Who do you believe acted as your main sponsor when developing your own literacy?
