Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words | In the article, by Peter Elbow, the article discusses the experience and struggle between teachers in first year college writing courses. Elbow discusses his own struggle of having to decide if he should allow his students to “conform to the language and culture of mainstream english” or he feels that “there is an obligation to give all my students access to the written language of power and prestige.” Elbow then proceeds to explain his reasonings and backs up his claims with concrete evidence. Later on in the article, Elbow discusses the impact World War II had on English and English as a second language. At the end of the article, Elbow concludes it by saying that he wants to “make the classroom a place that is safe for all forms of language considered wrong.” Throughout the article, I was a little confused as to what the main idea was, but after reading it a few times, I think I understand what it is about. |
