Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Edited by Trustees of Boston University , What Is Literacy? , Boston University , 1989, jamespaulgee.com/pdfs/Gee What is Literacy.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In the passage from What is Literacy, it lists five different points about discourses.

  1. Discourses are inherently ideological
  2. Discourses are resistant to internal criticism and self- scrutiny
  3. Discourse-defined positions from which to speak and heave are not, just defined internal to a discourse
  4. Any discourse concerns itself with certain objects and puts forward certain concepts, viewpoints, and values at the expense of others
  5. Discourses are intimately related to the distribution of social power and hierarchical structure in society

A question raised in the reading was “How does one come by the discourses that he or she controls?”

Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Acquisition: “Process of acquiring something subconsciously by exposure to models and a process of trial and error”

Learning: “process that involves conscious knowledge gained through teaching, though not necessarily from someone officially designated a teacher”

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page brandt , deborah. “Sponsers of Literacy .” Brandt.pdf, May 1998, comphacker.org/pdfs/632/Brandt.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words The opening paragraph talks about how writing and reading has changed within the years and how peoples literacy skills have also improved with time. It also mentions that literacy skills can also shift with new generations. For the past five years, Brandt has been tracing sponsors of literacy finding out how Americans recalled how they learned to read and write. In the passage, Brandt traces the dynamics of literacy sponsorship to  the life experiences of different individuals. In one of the people Brandt studied, Dora Lopez, she mentions that they had to travel several miles away just to access Spanish newspapers and magazines.  These magazines and newspapers carried information that was important and special to them. Lopez discusses how she taught herself Spanish and learned how to use computers by being sponsored by her surroundings and parents.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Sponsorship: “ a fitting term for the figures who turned up

most typically in people’s memories of literacy learning: older relatives,

teachers, priests, supervisors, military officers, editors, influential authors.

Sponsors, as we ordinarily think of them, are powerful figures who bankroll events or smooth the way for initiates.”- Deborah Brandt

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This article relates back to the very first one we read which both mention the different struggles with languages and literacy.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. What are your thoughts on the people and stories that came from the people Brandt studied?

Peer Group Resumes

  1. Hi my name is Julie Cavallaro and I am from Long Island, New York. One thing I am good at when it comes to writing is making sure the sentences are well put together and make sense. I am good at checking for grammatical errors and punctuation. Aside from that, I don’t really have any other strengths when it comes to writing. I hope to improve being able to successfully start my works or writing and being able to make strong thesis statements.
  2. In my peer group, I want people to actually edit my work, and help me improve my writing to be the best it can be. I am usually on my phone, so I am really good at communicating and getting back to people within a reasonable amount of time.
  3. I have never seen or read Harry Potter, so I don’t know which house I would be in.
  4. jtcavall@go.olemiss.edu
  5. I am choosing to do option 2 of the A -grade

August 28 Identity Reflection

Julie Cavallaro

Growing up, I loved reading picture books every night before bed. Now, I don’t read as much as I like to. For me, it is hard to find the time to sit down to enjoy a book without being interrupted by something. When I was in elementary school, I used to read magazines and the newspaper every morning before school. This was one of the ways I actually learned to write, by reading the articles within those works of writing. Reading the Twitter threads from Kimmy, it brought back some memories from High School where we had discussed this issue in one of my english classes. We discussed how this same event has happened to kids within my class. It wasn’t until that discussion where I fully realized how this issue can affect people. One of the books that I have read, which I enjoyed a lot, that has also helped me reflect on my identity, race, and gender, was the novel Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow.

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page elbow, Peter. “Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond ‘Mistakes,’ ‘Bad …” Https://Www.jaconlinejournal.com/Archives/vol19.3/Elbow-Inviting.pdf, 1999, www.compsavestheworld.qwriting.qc.cuny.edu/files/2010/01/Inviting_mothertongue.pdf.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In the article, by Peter Elbow, the article discusses the experience and struggle between teachers in first year college writing courses. Elbow discusses his own struggle of having to decide if he should allow his students to “conform to the language and culture of mainstream english” or he feels that “there is an obligation to give all my students access to the written language of power and prestige.” Elbow then proceeds to explain his reasonings and backs up his claims with concrete evidence. Later on in the article, Elbow discusses the impact World War II had on English and English as a second language. At the end of the article, Elbow  concludes it by saying that he wants to “make the classroom a place that is safe for all forms of language considered wrong.” Throughout the article, I was a little confused as to what the main idea was, but after reading it a few times, I think I understand what it is about.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Ambiguities- he quality of being open to more than one interpretation

Pragmatic- dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations

Standard Written English-  “is the usage, grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling that will pass muster with most university faculty around here as correct or at least acceptable. Faculty members will differ from each other a bit, but on most of these language matters, they will agree.” – Peter Elbow

usurp – to take a position of power  illegally or by force

podcast Roundtable reflection

After listening to the podcast, which I enjoyed a lot, one piece of advice I found to be useful is when Harrison had said “I wish I would have understood or grasped truly just how much free time I would have on my hands,” and having to structure your schedule. He also gave really good advice by saying “ set some time aside to always eat, get your lunch and study, space your classes out, give your time, give your brain some time to rest. And to truly think about what you’re learning and what you’re taking in every day.” Also, when Skylar said to get your work done and not procrastinate because you will eventually drown in work, related to me a lot.  I found this advice really useful because, if I am going to be honest, I am a huge procrastinator. I tend to put off assignments and studying till the last minute and cram all my work into a short amount of time. What Harrison said about structuring your time and schedule is something I will definitely use in the future. Another piece of advice that I found to be useful is when  Cristian said to “go to the events and engage.” I found this to be useful because without exposing yourself to other people and events, it will be really hard to meet new people and find connections. One thing that I am most looking forward to this year is meeting new people from all different places and backgrounds. Coming from New York, I do not know a lot of people that will/are attending Ole Miss this Fall. I love meeting new people and being sociable so I am definitely excited to meet new people. One thing that I am least looking forward to this year is having all but one class online. I personally do not enjoy online classes because I worry that I might miss an assignment or test, as well as maybe even sleeping through a zoom session or having trouble connecting to the Wifi. Some advice I would give to someone going into senior year would be to not stress the little things and to plan accordingly and stay on top of your work and assignments. Senior year is one of the most stressful times of school. Worrying about ACT and SAT, maintaining a good GPA, and applying to schools can be tiring and time consuming. It is normal to feel overwhelmed and lost, when it comes to deciding where you want to attend school, but it is always important to talk to others so they can help guide you and give you advice.

Unit Reflections

For each major essay assignment, you will complete a long-form reflection about your experience writing the paper. Your teacher will provide specific instructions for these reflections.

Weekly Reflections

Weekly Reflections are longer, more thoughtful posts that you will complete about every week of the semester. Topics for these posts will vary by instructor, but they will usually be completed outside of class and have a specific word-count requirement.

Daily Writes

These are 5 minute or less quick writes that we’ll complete in class most days. This will also include any in-class writing about the readings that we do. If you don’t bring your tablet/laptop to class every day or if you prefer writing on paper during class, you’ll need to type up and post these after class.
