- “Daisy” Ad (1964) – President Lyndon B. Johnson
- The “Daisy” Ad is Lyndon B Johnson campaign ad for the 1964 presidential election against Barry Goldwater. This video is showing a bombing that could happen if Lyndon isn’t elected for president to bring peace to the U.S.
- The creator of this ad is Tony Schwart. The link is posted here : https://youtu.be/riDypP1KfOU
- This video is very compelling because of the time period which is famously known as “Baby Boomers”. Using the little incident girl will grab the majority of the population since many are trying to start a family. Voters parental instincts will kick in and will do anything to protect their children. This ad propose that Lyndon will bring peace to the world if you elect him.
- American Youth Commercial – Richard Nixon 1968
- The American Youth Commercial is about electing Richard Nixon for 1968 President. Richard Nixon is running as a republican and wants to help boast the growth of the youth.
- The creator of this ad is Eugene Jones. The link is posted here : https://youtu.be/bL0euDcd50c
- Nixon is using the youth of today as why they should elect him into office. He believes the youth can change the world which means he will help them make change. I think this ad is hinting at lowering the voting age for the uprising youth. He says in his ad ” Vote like your whole world depends on it.” In hindsight this ad will appeal to everyone because its allowing their kids or grandchildren to start having a say in the government. This ad is effective on a broad scale.
- George McGovern 1972 Campaign Ad ” Change”
- The 1972 campaign ad “Change” is a presidential campaign for George McGovern. McGovern is running as a democratic and wants change for the people.
- The creator of this video is Charles Guggeheim. The link is posted here : https://youtu.be/YhYJwXrmOqM
- McGovern uses this quote for the basis of his video, “McGovern Democratic for the people”. In his video he is talking to a group of citizens about what he wants to do if he wins the election. This make him seem approachable and willing to listen to people opinions to start change in this society. He is trying to appeal to the people of American as a normal citizen who wants to help make America great again.
I am most interested in the “Daisy” Ad for President Lyndon B. Johnson. Tony Schwart thought of an amazing way to appeal to majority of the population. 1964 is known as the Baby Boomer Era. He used a little incident girl as the basis of his campaign ad to appeal to the emotional side of parents. Parents will do anything to protect their children life and this ad makes it seem like President Lyndon wants to protect them to. Lyndon B. Johnson says at the end, “We must love each other or we must die”. This is saying, we must love our kids enough to elect Johnson so he can protect them.
Any of these work. If you think you can get a full essay out of the Daisy ad, go for it. You might need to dig into the context at that time to address what is left unsaid–what people already knew about the situation and potential for nuclear war at that time.
