Blog 2 – Rhetorical Outline

  1. Introduction
    1.  Introduce video (include link)
      1. The Daisy Ad is Lyndon B. Johnson campaign ad for the 1964 presidential election. This ad is featuring a little incident girl playing outside and interrupts her playing a voice counting down the explosion of a nuclear bomb.
    2. State how you are analyzing it and to what end
      1. After watching the ad I start to analyze what events happen prior to the airing of the ad to get a broader view of the time period. I begin analyzing events 4 years prior that impacted the society tremendously. With this knowledge I re-watch the video to study how the ad uses rhetorical appeals. Then I do research about 1964 specifically to understand why a child was the center of attention in this ad. Finally I dive deeper into all three appeals to get the basis of my body paragraphs.
  2. Body
    1. Logos: list elements of the video that reflect to logos
      1. The use of the following two quotes
        1. “These are the stakes! To make a world in which all of God’s children can live, or to go into the dark. We must either love each other, or we must die.”
        2. “Vote for President Johnson on November 3rd. These stakes are to high for you to stay home.”
    2. Pathos: list elements of the video that reflect pathos
      1. Sense of curiosity
        1. Starts off the ad with no indication of whats its about
        2. Makes the audience focus on watching it
        3. The cuteness of the child grabs attention and curiosity
      2. Appeal to fear
        1. Unknown voice counting
        2. Nuclear explosion makes the girl disappear
        3. Events happen prior to 1964
          1. Starts with Bay of Pig invasion end with assassination of JFK
    3. Ethos: list elements of the video that reflect ethos
      1. Lyndon B. Johnson is currently president due to the assassination of JFK
      2. The use of his voice at the end shows who the ad is about
        1. Familiar voice
        2. Has experience in his position
        3. Should be able to trust him because of this
  3. Conclusion
    1. Assess the rhetorically effective and ineffective qualities of the video
      1. Effective: The use of rhetorical appeals ties all together
      2. Ineffective: Use of the appeal to fear
    2. Address how this analysis helps you understand something about how rhetoric works in this type of video
      1. This help me understand why this ad was so controversial and effective in his run for president.
