Reading Journal Gee

What is Literacy? By: James Paul Gee

Summary: In the beginning of the article Gee states about his experience as a linguist. He states that literacy at first was a discourse. He also analyzes that the discourses of literacy was not popular in America. Americans didn’t agree with the literacy discourse so they taught it a different way by teaching us vocabulary and grammar. Gee analyzes how we can learn literacy and use it into our writing. Gee states that we need to practice like we are playing a sport or a musical instrument. It takes practice to get better at using literacy in our writing. “Dominant Literacy is a control of secondary use of language used in what I call “Dominant discourse” “. (Gee,23) This quote is new to me because I didn’t know that literacy can be used as a discourse in the English language. This article connects to Brandt’s by stating that literacy can be taught in any way possible.

Peer Group Resume Intro

Hi, my name is Kyle Wakefield and one thing I’m good at is detailed writing! The one thing I need to work on is coming up with ideas on how to write with the topic. My goal in this class for this semester is to make an “A” grade! I would like to be in a group more than three. Idk what Hogwarts house I would be in and my preferred email is: krwakefi@go.olemiss.edu

Reading Journal Brandt

Sponsors of Literacy By: Deborah Brandt

Summary: In this article by Brandt she states that literacy back in the 1900’s was steam pressed. Steam pressing made it tough for teachers to teach the curriculum. Print jobs were also a low profit job with a lot of multi skilled workers. After the Industrial Revolution printing became a lot easier. Literacy in the 20th century grew a lot because more people were learning how to write. Literacy in writing played a huge role in the print industry because more people started to write efficiently. In the last quarter of the 20th century literacy took a huge rise by debate and research.  This article connects to Elbow’s by talking about how literacy has grown over the years just like writing has. Brandt’s article reminded me on how wet can all grow in literacy and writing just like Elbow’s article.  “People’s literacy skills have grown sharply more central to everyday information and goods as well as to the pursuit to education, civil rights, and status.” (Brandt, 167) This quote is new to me because I didn’t think that literacy would play this big of a role in our lives.

Aspect of Identity Blog

My identity of being a white man is that everyone thinks everything we earn was given to us. I have a learning disability under the autism spectrum and that affected my reading, writing, and speaking skills! At three years old I couldn’t read, write, or speak efficiently, I had to improve by showing hardwork and dedication. I went to speech class three times a week for seven or eight years of my life. Being privileged makes no sense to me at all because I had to work tirelessly to get to where I”m at today! Kimberly Yam’s twitter feed really connects my story because everyone thinks I am privileged to be white like on how she was made fun of being an asian. We are all made different!! We should all come together as one and accept for who we are!!

Reading Journal Elbow

Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes”, “Bad English”, and “Wrong Language”

Summary: The article states how to properly write in the english language by advising you to not use improper punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. Elbow states that writing in the english language can make the classroom a better place and a much better environment to learn. Writing takes comfort in order to write good pieces of writing. Elbow also discussed how his background transferred into his writing by expressing his childhood. He wrote this article to express all ways to write efficiently and effectively in the english language. We can all come together as writers by being in our comfort zone when we write. Everyone has a different way of writing. My take on this article is that we can all unite when we write in our comfort zones. Everyone has different techniques in their writing so why don’t we accept all forms of writing. My second take in this article is that no language is necessarily wrong in writing. All citizens write differently using vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar.

“The problem is that students cannot have that crucial experience of safety for writing inside our classrooms unless we can also show them how to be safe outside-that is, unless we can also help them produce final drafts that conform to Standard Written English.”  (Elbow. 361) The problem students experience with writing safety inside and outside of the classroom is that they have no help on how to produce a good final draft.

FASTrack/Writ Podcast Round Table

The first piece of advice I took from this podcast as useful is to never procrastinate in doing your work. This is good advice because all work will pile up on you and that builds up stress. The second piece of advice I took from this podcast is to prioritize your studies by always doing your classwork and homework on time. Completing and turning in your homework on time can increase your chances of getting better grades. The thing I’m most looking forward to is basketball season because I work as a student manager for the team and I love the atmosphere of college basketball. The least thing I’m looking forward to is all the hybrid and online classes because I think it is just a tough way to learn in college. The advice I would give to a freshman/senior in high school is to always make good decisions about your studies because you want to make good study habits in high school so you get ready for college.
