This Ted Talk about having 10 great ways to have a conversation is that to keep it short and straight to the point. The main thing I took away from this video is that having conversations don’t have to be long but long enough to cover the topic. Chelsea asked the audience first of anyone losing friends over politics or ended friendships over Facebook. Half of the audience have lost friends over social media because of something stupid like politics. This is why we need to know how to have better conversations by listening to what others have to say instead of going with your own opinion. Another way we can have better conversation is that we can show more attention to the person who is speaking. Showing our attention shows the person who is speaking more respect when having a conversation. Having conversations with your friends can be a great way to make good friendships.

Reading Journal Murray
Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page | “The Maker’s Eye” by Donald Murray
DONALD M. MURRAY is the author of articles, novels, and poetry, and writes the weekly “Over 60” column for The Boston Globe. His work on the craft of writing (in addition to many articles for The Writer) includes several books, among them A Writer Teaches Writing (Houghton Mifflin), Learning by Teaching (Heinemann, Boynton/Cook), Writing for Your Readers (Globe Pequot Press), Write to Learn, Read to Write, and the Craft of Revision (all Harcourt Brace), and most recently, Crafting a Life in Essay, Story, Poem (Heinemann, Boynton/Cook). |
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words | Murray states at the beginning of this article, when a beginner writer completes his first draft he is looking to check for grammatical errors and structure. When a professional writer completes his first draft it is the start of a writing process. The difference between amatuer and professional writers is experience. All writers must accept criticism and must accept praise of others. Writers can never depend on others to do their work. The seven elements of writing are essential to having a good piece of writing. Murray emphasizes on his personal writing and on how to write good essays. After Murray writes his manuscript he checks to be sure he has all the seven elements of writing. A piece of writing is never finished, it is delivered by a certain deadline. |
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. | “A piece of writing is never finished. It is delivered to a deadline, torn out of the typewriter on demand, sent off with a sense of frustration and incompleteness.” (Murray,4) This term is new to me because I never knew that a piece of writing took this long to process and publish. |
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?
|
This article connects me to Elbow because Elbow and Murray both talk about their personal life and how they write in their life. |
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. | What is the main difference between an amatuer writer and a professional writer? |
Reading Journal Elbow
Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes”, “Bad English”, and “Wrong Language”
Summary: The article states how to properly write in the english language by advising you to not use improper punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. Elbow states that writing in the english language can make the classroom a better place and a much better environment to learn. Writing takes comfort in order to write good pieces of writing. Elbow also discussed how his background transferred into his writing by expressing his childhood. He wrote this article to express all ways to write efficiently and effectively in the english language. We can all come together as writers by being in our comfort zone when we write. Everyone has a different way of writing. My take on this article is that we can all unite when we write in our comfort zones. Everyone has different techniques in their writing so why don’t we accept all forms of writing. My second take in this article is that no language is necessarily wrong in writing. All citizens write differently using vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar.
“The problem is that students cannot have that crucial experience of safety for writing inside our classrooms unless we can also show them how to be safe outside-that is, unless we can also help them produce final drafts that conform to Standard Written English.” (Elbow. 361) The problem students experience with writing safety inside and outside of the classroom is that they have no help on how to produce a good final draft.
FASTrack/Writ Podcast Round Table
The first piece of advice I took from this podcast as useful is to never procrastinate in doing your work. This is good advice because all work will pile up on you and that builds up stress. The second piece of advice I took from this podcast is to prioritize your studies by always doing your classwork and homework on time. Completing and turning in your homework on time can increase your chances of getting better grades. The thing I’m most looking forward to is basketball season because I work as a student manager for the team and I love the atmosphere of college basketball. The least thing I’m looking forward to is all the hybrid and online classes because I think it is just a tough way to learn in college. The advice I would give to a freshman/senior in high school is to always make good decisions about your studies because you want to make good study habits in high school so you get ready for college.

If you don’t bring your tablet/laptop to class every day or if you prefer writing on paper during class, you’ll need to type up and post these after class.
