Discourse Communities

Ann M. Johns is a distinguished writer, after all, Johns’s director of multiple programs at SDSU. Though Ann Johns has many writings and accomplishments we could talk about I would like to focus on Discourse Communities. In this work, Johns talks about communities. Now when thinking about communities I automatically think about a town and how everyone who lives in that town is apart of that community. But yet Johns was able to provide a different perspective for me. There are so many more types of communities other than just the ones that we live in. For example, Writ 102 is a community. Everyone in writ 102 is in an academic community. Academic communities are actually one of the biggest focuses in John’s writing. The author breaks down academic communities into 5 main groups, those being Academics, Musicians, Athletes, Artist, and Physicians. Each of these groups can then be broken down even further into subgroups and then even into subcategories. Though these subcategories could go on and on Johns only has one level of subcategories. But it is things like this that show just how complicated communities actually are. Though they can be simple like a community of people who all live together, there can also be a deep community that many may not know about. Continuing to talk about all the different communities Johns moves on to talking about professional communities. Johns mentions an example of this professional discourse community that can be found on page 503 of the reading, says “students might study musicians who devote their lives to pursuing their art but who also use written texts to dialogue with others in their profession.”. Johns goes on to continue explaining the study conducted and interviews that were held about these professional discourse communities. Through just these two types of discourse communities mentioned, we can see how complex these communities can be and how many we may be apart of. Ann M. Johns does an amazing job of explaining all the components that make up these types of communities but there is always more to explore about this topic too.

There are some different discourse communities that I am in. Many of these communities being Academic, I am a Criminal Justice major. This puts me in a community of students who are into Criminal justice and law. I also fall under the Athlete subcategory of academic discourse communities. There are four of these that I am apart of. Sideline cheerleader, Competitive cheerleader, Cross country runner, and Track runner. Even further into that, I am in the subsection of Flyer is both sideline and competitive cheerleading. There are so many different ways to break down the communities that we are in and those are just a few examples of mine. If I look specifically at the chart that johns provided I can see that I am in Athletes, Team sports, individual sports, academics, and chemistry. And that is all off of one chart. Imagine all the possibilities I could fall under with even more charts and more analysis.
