“10 Ways to Have a Better Conversation”

The video “10 Ways to Have a Better Conversation” goes into detail about how most people do not communicate well with others and how it is affecting us as people. The video is led by Celeste Headlee, a radio host who has been communicating on the radio with the media for years. In the TedTalk she explains the ten helpful tips for having a conversation. The ten tips are : not to multitask, don’t pontificate, use open ended questions, go with the flow, if you don’t know say that you don’t know, don’t equate your experience with theirs, try not to repeat yourself, stay out of the weeds, listen, and to be brief. The two points I find most helpful for my own life and conversations is to go with the flow and if you don’t know, say you don’t know. By going with the flow we will not repeat questions and stop listening to the person speaking. Saying you don’t know is also good because you can make sure you’re not saying things that are not true.

rhetorical analysis

The social media post that I have chosen to analyze the rhetoric of is actor Chris Evans’ response to President Donald Trump’s tweet about his condition after staying at Walter Reed Medical Center with the Corona Virus and how American’s should not be afraid of Covid-19. Chris Evans’ is an actor best known for his role as Steve Rogers or Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or (MCU) films. Evans’ is also known for being critical of President Trump. Chris Evans’ is followed by 14.1 million individuals on his Twitter profile, while President Donald Trump is followed by 31.6 on his respective Twitter profile.

The United States and most of the World is still battling the deadly pandemic known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 or Covid-19. As of October 5th, 2020, The United States had accumulated over 7.49 million cases and around 210 thousand deaths related to the virus respectively. Although many are taking the virus seriously, some are still downplaying the deadly effects of the virus in the United States. Our own President, Donald Trump, has downplayed the seriousness of the virus on multiple occasions. Chris Evans’ intended audience was aimed at his own audience that is largely his fans and his Democratic followers.

Evans’ disputes President Donald Trump’s claim that American’s should not fear the Coronavirus. The Tweet mostly relates to pathos. Evan’s wants his readers and followers under that although the President claims that the virus is not serious and that he is in great health, not everyone has access to the same medical care. To accomplish this the writer explains how the president was under around the clock care at Walter Reed Medical Center using the best doctors and medicines that are not accessible to everyday people. Evans’ uses the pathos to make his followers understand how President Donald Trump is downplaying the accessible health care disparity between the wealthy and the poor in the United States. By using negative phrases and words such as, “This is reckless to a shocking dress, even for you,” Evans’ is pointing out that this is an ongoing problem with the country and President Donald Trump. The debate of whether the virus is being taken too seriously or not taking the virus serious enough. His pathos are shown by saying how everyone does not have access to world class medical care like the president. Evans’ wants his readers to understand that the President is more worried about his own prosperity than those of the people he is supposed to be leading.

Actor Chris Evans’ main purpose of responding to President Donald Trump’s tweet was to explain to his followers that the president is downplaying the effects of the Coronavirus. By using pathos the writer is explaining the President’s incompetence on the issue and how he is misleading the American people.
