1.The‌ ‌first‌ ‌piece‌ ‌of‌ ‌advice‌ ‌that‌ ‌I‌ ‌found‌ ‌helpful‌ ‌was‌ ‌to‌ ‌get‌ ‌involved‌ ‌with‌ ‌a‌ ‌group‌ ‌or‌ ‌organization‌ ‌on‌
campus‌ ‌or‌ ‌off‌ ‌campus.‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌currently‌ ‌taking‌ ‌that‌ ‌advice‌ ‌as‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌in‌ ‌fraternity‌ ‌rush.‌ ‌The‌ ‌second‌
piece‌ ‌of‌ ‌advice‌ ‌that‌ ‌I‌ ‌heard‌ ‌was‌ ‌to‌ ‌get‌ ‌involved‌ ‌with‌ ‌Fastrack.‌ ‌I‌ ‌plan‌ ‌on‌ ‌attending‌ ‌Fastrack‌ ‌events‌
in‌ ‌the‌ ‌future.‌
2.I‌ ‌am‌ ‌mostly‌ ‌looking‌ ‌forward‌ ‌to‌ ‌being‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌fraternity‌ ‌and‌ ‌making‌ ‌close‌ ‌bonds‌ ‌with‌ ‌a‌ ‌great‌ ‌group‌ ‌of‌
guys.‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌also‌ ‌looking‌ ‌forward‌ ‌to‌ ‌living‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌new‌ ‌state‌ ‌full‌ ‌of‌ ‌new‌ ‌opportunities.‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌from‌ ‌San‌
Antonio,‌ ‌Texas‌ ‌and‌ ‌it‌ ‌excites‌ ‌me‌ ‌that‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌in‌ ‌a‌ ‌place‌ ‌so‌ ‌different.‌ ‌The‌ ‌thing‌ ‌I‌ ‌am‌ ‌looking‌ ‌forward‌
to‌ ‌the‌ ‌least‌ ‌is‌ ‌definitely‌ ‌the‌ ‌possibility‌ ‌of‌ ‌being‌ ‌sent‌ ‌home‌ ‌due‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌Covid‌ ‌pandemic.‌ ‌I‌
understand‌ ‌that‌ ‌Covid‌ ‌is‌ ‌a‌ ‌serious‌ ‌matter‌ ‌that‌ ‌needs‌ ‌to‌ ‌be‌ ‌fought‌ ‌against‌ ‌with‌ ‌the‌ ‌regulation‌ ‌of‌ ‌big‌
crowds,‌ ‌but‌ ‌on‌ ‌the‌ ‌other‌ ‌hand‌ ‌it‌ ‌is‌ ‌just‌ ‌a‌ ‌huge‌ ‌pain‌ ‌to‌ ‌have‌ ‌to‌ ‌deal‌ ‌with‌ ‌this‌ ‌as‌ ‌a‌ ‌freshman.‌
3.The‌ ‌advice‌ ‌I‌ ‌would‌ ‌give‌ ‌to‌ ‌both‌ ‌9th‌ ‌graders‌ ‌and‌ ‌seniors‌ ‌is‌ ‌to‌ ‌get‌ ‌good‌ ‌grades‌ ‌but‌ ‌not‌ ‌to‌ ‌sweat‌ ‌it‌ ‌if‌
you‌ ‌make‌ ‌mistakes‌ ‌along‌ ‌the‌ ‌way.‌ ‌The‌ ‌mistakes‌ ‌you‌ ‌make‌ ‌may‌ ‌be‌ ‌negative‌ ‌at‌ ‌the‌ ‌time‌ ‌but‌ ‌will‌
turn‌ ‌into‌ ‌positives‌ ‌down‌ ‌the‌ ‌road‌ ‌if‌ ‌you‌ ‌learn‌ ‌from‌ ‌them.‌

Reading Journal for Elbow

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Elbow, Peter. Inviting the Mother Tongue.
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words This article detailed the conflicting goals and obligations a first year writing teacher will encounter. The writer relays the thoughts of most teachers of first year writing. The idea that precision is not possible was brought about. Teachers need to create a safe space for all dialects of english, even if they are considered bad language. The writer had two goals of a safe space and not penalizing wrong language but encouraging SWE. My reaction towards these goals was a good one because of how helpful they would be if every teacher practiced those goals. The claim I got from this article was that students writing will not improve without a safe space for “wrong language.”
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. “It is because I care so much about making room for the mother tongue and making the classroom safe for what people call wrong that I want to insist that my students learn to produce SWE too.(Elbow 361)”

Mother Tongue: Spoken language

Standard Written English(SWE): Proper written language

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research? This reading does not necessarily connect to anything else in this class since we have not done much else, but I would compare it to the rising theme in education of accepting a student’s past.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. What are the differences between mother tongue and SWE?
