Irvin, L. Lenny. What Is “Academic” Writing. |
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words | In Irvin’s What Is “Academic” Writing, it explains what a college writing course will expect from a student. The article starts with advice on how first drafts do not have to be perfect and most writers do not have all of their thoughts put together before they start writing. Then, Ivrin goes through strategies for writing like asking yourself “who’s your audience” and “what’s your message.” Following that, he describes how writing preparation has changed in the transition for high school to college. In college, research becomes more important, we cannot just look at Wikipedia and the first thing that pops up when we search for something. We have to look in-depth into our topic. We have to be able to read and understand complex texts. Irvin ends with the claims that writing is an argument and an analysis. When writing an argumentative paper the writer has to provide claims from both sides so that we can gain a better understanding of both. And when analyzing, we need to know what the reader wants to hear. |
