Irvin, L. Lenny. What Is “Academic” Writing

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In Irvin’s What Is “Academic” Writing, it explains what a college writing course will expect from a student. The article starts with advice on how first drafts do not have to be perfect and most writers do not have all of their thoughts put together before they start writing. Then, Ivrin goes through strategies for writing like asking yourself “who’s your audience” and “what’s your message.” Following that, he describes how writing preparation has changed in the transition for high school to college. In college, research becomes more important, we cannot just look at Wikipedia and the first thing that pops up when we search for something. We have to look in-depth into our topic. We have to be able to read and understand complex texts. Irvin ends with the claims that writing is an argument and an analysis. When writing an argumentative paper the writer has to provide claims from both sides so that we can gain a better understanding of both. And when analyzing, we need to know what the reader wants to hear.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. The difference between speaking and writing. Speaking allows for the speaker to read the situation better while the writer is basically “blindfolded” when writing because the writer cannot read the audience.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

The parts about how the first draft does not need to be perfect and that most writers do not have all of their ideas together when they start writing relates to other articles in this class.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Why is using ‘I’ considered so informal in writing?

Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page Murray, Donald. “The Maker’s Eye”
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words In Donald Murray’s “The Maker’s Eye”, he starts by explaining the difference between beginning writers and professional writers. Beginners complete their first draft then look through it to correct a few errors, then consider it done. Professionals complete their first draft, then start the writing process. Murray goes on to describe how the writing process should work. One of the most useful claims he makes is to be able to take criticism. To be able to accept what others say and to learn from what they say. That claim can relate to life outside of writing too. Murray then details how knowing what your audience wants and what they want from you as an important part of the writing process. He then asks “when does this process end?” Murray answers by making the claim that a writer’s work is never finished. It is only finished when its deadline passes.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. “When professional writers complete their first draft, they usually feel they are at the start of the writing process”(Murray 1). A writer’s first draft is not considered part of the writing process because it’s main use is to be able to know what others want you to write.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This article connects to how we do major projects. When we do peer reviews it helps the writer understand more of what they should write and how they should edit their writing.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. If we know when to stop writing before the deadline passes, are we doing the writing process correctly?

Fishman, Andrea. “Fishman Literacy A Lesson from the Amish.pdf.” Google Drive, Google, drive.google.com/file/d/1hyBNBd0byQpJoqqdlqajkzKGgTeqbkIv/view.

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words “Literacy and Cultural Context: A Lesson from the Amish” by Andrea R. Fishman is a description of how the Amish learn literacy. This article follows the Fishers, a family living in an Amish settlement. It details the differences between how the Fishers and mainstream society use and learn literacy. My reaction to how the Fishers operated was a look of shock. I did not realize how much differently the Amish use literacy. For example, the Amish use literacy for the main purpose of following Amish tradition and beliefs. As a family, the Fishers would switch off reading from books that respect their beliefs. The children would learn by using their abilities to “reading the world”(Friere). The Amish children learned by following what their parents and other immediate relatives did. I learned that an important part of being an Amish youth was the ability to follow written directions and the children had the absence of originality as a desirable feature in school. The author goes on with the claim that mainstream society’s teacher’s role may not be to prepare students to enter mainstream society but rather help them see what mainstream society offers.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. “To read the world”(Friere), Amish children obtained the ability to learn from their world around them at a very young age.
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This article connects to the article we read about how different dialects write and how teachers should not condemn different dialects but embrace them and try to correct them by encouraging students.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Why do the Amish keep themselves hidden from mainstream ideals of literacy? I understand that they want to stay true to their traditions and beliefs but I think that learning about other people’s ideas is important to becoming a well-rounded adult.
