Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page | Grant-Davie, Keith. Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents. |
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words | In “Rhetoriacl Situations and Their Constituents” by Keith Grant-Davie, it details the right and wrong way of using rhetoric. In the article, two people, Bitzer and Vatz, offer information on rhetoric. A person named Scott Consigny makes a claim that Bitzer and Vatz are both right and wrong. Consigny argues with Vatz that rhetoric should involve integrity, “the ability to apply a standard set of strategies effectively to any situation the rhetor may face”(Grant-Davie 265). When arguing for Bitzer, he states “that rhetoric should also involve ‘receptivity’— the ability to respond to the conditions and demands of individual situations”(Grant-Davie 265). Consigny goes on to ask “what is the discourse about, why is the discourse needed, and what is the discourse trying to accomplish”(Grant-Davie 267-268). Then asks “who is the rhetor and who is the audience”(Grant-Davie 269, 271). All of these talking about exigence, rhetor, audience, and constraints help students understand rhetorical strategies. |
