Melzer, Dan. “Understanding Discourse Communities.” Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing, vol. 3, 2020, 100-115. |
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words | Melzer starts the article off talking about how he is going to become a rock star and the steps he took to make this dream come true. He compares the lessons he is trying to convey to the writer through his journey of learning to play the guitar. He elaborates on what a discourse community really is. He also talks about how a discourse community becomes similar due to the genres. He uses a great example of using his music as genres. I really like the structure and comparisons to music, it helped understand the lessons behind the writing better. |
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. | “specific topic with shared goals and a community of members who frequently interact can be considered a discourse community based on Swales’ definition.”(Melzer 103).
“Communication mechanisms in discourse communities can be emails, text messages, social media tools, print texts, memes, oral presentations, and so on.”(Melzer 103). |
