CRQ 03/22

The call: “McDonald’s is gross and greasy. But my humiliation, and that of my friends and family wasn’t because I made burgers. It was because I was supposed to be better than that. Supposed to be more intelligent, more hard working and more talented than the people I worked with. I deserve a ‘good.’ I had an inflated sense of self that comes with being a person of privilege.”

The Response: The world around me relates to this context because people are more privilege than others especially in the job market. If there was a job opening and a black male and white male applied for it but the black male is more qualified for the job than the white male, it is a huge possibility that the white male will still get the job because of the color of his skin. The person of the article is more privilege which is why his friends and family are humiliated because they know he could get a “good” job. Many people sees McDonald’s as a place that is for people that can’t get a “good” job or as a disability. This is shown throughout the university because of the people that are mainly African Americans and they are working in the kitchens/cafeterias to provide food for all the students.

It is also shown on television. Most shows have whites as doctors, lawyers, CEOs, and more. The African Americans would be poor, struggling, or just in a bad place. It is rare that an African American would be successful on television, but now you see a lot but not more than whites especially in movies. This context s shown in everyday life and just all over the world. One thing is a job is a job and anyone and everyone deserves a “good” job no matter what. McDonald’s isn’t bad, it is just a fast food restaurant that is very popular and have been around a while. No specific person should be privilege for a job because everyone needs money to provide for their family and to survive. Everyone deserves a “good” job or just a job period.

The Question: Why does skin color most of the time be a determining factor on who gets the job or not?

Synthesis Unit Reflection

The synthesis assignment was something that I have done before. I don’t really know my outcome on it. I don’t know if I did good, bad, or alright. I am hoping the very best though. In Writing 101 last semester, we also had an synthesis assignment that we had to do. I did struggle a lot with this assignment. I used one of the sources from Rereading America and a documentary from Netflix called “Miss Representation.” I think I mainly struggled with connecting the two sources and also the word count. My synthesis paper last semester in Writing 101 word count was only 1000 words instead 1200 like this assignment this semester. I discovered about myself as a writing during this assignment that I should make more time and effort because I already struggle writing papers. I also discovered that I should try to get all the help I can and use all the resources so I can continue to improve in my writing and become a better writer. I think my strengths in this paper was my topic sentences and explain the sources. I struggled with finding the right sources as well because I wasn’t sure if it fit my thesis and what I wanted my entire paper to be on. I think that was hard for me because it is kind of hard to find the absolute right sources. I think my sources were good though and something I could use to support my thesis and topic sentences of each paragraph. Even though I don’t think I did good on this assignment, I learned a lot from it.

Something that I watch that relates to this class is an video o Facebook about some white parents that adopted an African American girl. The man said that people judge them and look at them funny because of their black daughter. He then one day judges a man besides a white woman and he just watched him just in case he might tries something or may try to steal the other lady’s purse. He talks about how people judge them and he does the same thing. He then tells his black daughter and apologizes for it and explains that one day she might get judged because of the color of her skin or because she is with a white family and how she is to handle it.

Connections of the two sources

My two sources “Becoming a Member of Society” and “Miss Representation” have many connections. A connection they both made was about women and how they are depicted as being weak. In “Miss Representation,” some women actually said that they felt less of themselves which is what society wants them to feel. Both sources how that it starts with young children and that they learn those things. Men are taught to see women as an sexual object in both sources. Women should not be seen as that because women are so much more that and should be more respected than just being seen as an sexual object. Gender roles are shown in both sources. It tells what women are taught as young children to do in life and for the rest of their lives. The source “Miss Representation” shows women that went outside of the gender roles and became CEOs, doctors, senators, and more. That source persuades women to become more than what men and society portrays them to be. Society sees men and women as the battle of the sexes. Women are depicted as “born losers” in “Becoming a Member of Society” but in “Miss Representation,” women show that they are more than that and that other women should follow their lead and be more, like a born leader.
