CRQ 04/10

The call: “You would know he found parallels between the struggles of those leaders and the issues people of color still face.”

The response: There are still many problems people of color still face today. Some things are job opportunities, more likely to be behind bars or dead than whites, school, the black culture, and so much more. These are problems are not getting better only worse. People of color are less likely to get a job if their competitor is white even though they may be more qualified for the job. Schools are also a problem because it seems as if they are getting re-segregated which is horrible. Blacks are also more likely to be behind bars for a harsh crime than whites just because the color of their skin. They are more likely to be dead mostly for no reason just because they are African American. They could just be walking home from the store with snacks just like Trayvon Martin and they would get killed because of false accusations of the person for them having a weapon or being a threat to others. It is constantly happening today, and this is how it is related to the word around me. It is related to the music I listen to because some artist talk about what is going on in the world and how it is wrong and should be stopped. No person of color should be judged or still face problems because racism has been over for years and also because they are people too just like any other person in this world. Everyone is the same no matter what color they are.

The question: Why do you think people can not get over racism or a person’s race?

The call: The author states “Sometimes she’ll start Tindering and will get so distracted she’ll miss her stop. She finds the sometimes falls into a soothing swiping rhythm where she’s not really looking at the men,  just calming herself with a repetitive pattern of left-right swipes. Getting a match seems to activate some primal-gratification center in her mind.” (Witt 273-274)

The response: The world around me relates to this because we are all so distracted with technology that we will forget where we’re going or doing or where we are. Technology can cause so many problems. If everyone around the world would sometimes put the phone down and pay attention, there would be way less problems in the world than before. The shows I watch on television also relates to the text because the people uses their phones a lot. Technology has became a way we live by where we all have this need for it.

The university relates to the text because everyone is walking to class while on their phones or being distracted by their phone in class. That shows how we sometimes forget and get so distracted by our phones where we don’t even realize it. Also, the university relates to the text because through email which is on our phones is a way the university and our instructors contact us or informs us on something very important or just something we need to know. The world is related to this text in many ways. Another way the world is related is that we are so attached to it that we just pick it up and everything while doing literally anything like driving, eating, reading, and more. When we are operating on our phones while driving, it causes many huge problems. We get so badly distracted with our phones and really it is a really huge problem in the world.

The question: What are some ways we can stop getting so easily distracted with our phones?

CRQ 03/22

The call: “McDonald’s is gross and greasy. But my humiliation, and that of my friends and family wasn’t because I made burgers. It was because I was supposed to be better than that. Supposed to be more intelligent, more hard working and more talented than the people I worked with. I deserve a ‘good.’ I had an inflated sense of self that comes with being a person of privilege.”

The Response: The world around me relates to this context because people are more privilege than others especially in the job market. If there was a job opening and a black male and white male applied for it but the black male is more qualified for the job than the white male, it is a huge possibility that the white male will still get the job because of the color of his skin. The person of the article is more privilege which is why his friends and family are humiliated because they know he could get a “good” job. Many people sees McDonald’s as a place that is for people that can’t get a “good” job or as a disability. This is shown throughout the university because of the people that are mainly African Americans and they are working in the kitchens/cafeterias to provide food for all the students.

It is also shown on television. Most shows have whites as doctors, lawyers, CEOs, and more. The African Americans would be poor, struggling, or just in a bad place. It is rare that an African American would be successful on television, but now you see a lot but not more than whites especially in movies. This context s shown in everyday life and just all over the world. One thing is a job is a job and anyone and everyone deserves a “good” job no matter what. McDonald’s isn’t bad, it is just a fast food restaurant that is very popular and have been around a while. No specific person should be privilege for a job because everyone needs money to provide for their family and to survive. Everyone deserves a “good” job or just a job period.

The Question: Why does skin color most of the time be a determining factor on who gets the job or not?

CRQ 02/22

The call: The author says “For one, ‘It should be my decision about whether I pick up the phone. People can call me, but I don’t have to talk to them.'” (Turkle 239)

The author says “Unauthorized immigrants are neither from Mars nor Venus.” (Suarez-Orozco and Suarez-Orozco 670)

The response: This call could be an issue because some people could be calling for an emergency or anything. This isn’t good. People should pick up the phone even though they don’t want to talk to them. You never know what is going on or what is happening. The university relates to it because if someone is getting followed and they call a friend nearby to help them or something but the friend doesn’t pick up the phone because they don’t want to or they think it is something else, the friend may now be in trouble. People just think that just because others call that they don’t want anything or they are wasting their time by calling which is the case sometimes but maybe one day that is not the case and someone may be in trouble or anything. People should just pick up the phone no matter what they think it may be. A call from a friend or strange number could mean someone/something could be in trouble or it could be just a ‘hi, how are you?’

This other call is just stating a fact. This relates to students at universities, public or private schools, community colleges, and trade schools. Unauthorized immigrants are people just like everyone else in the United States. Everyone should be treated equal. When they come to the United States, it is most likely because of the things going on in their county and they want to get away from it. Like the students at my university most likely came to the United States and to my University to further their education and for a better life. They are somewhat like aliens to the United States but they shouldn’t be treated that way because they are still people and now people that lives in the same country as you. People should always treat others how they would want to be treated no matter what. People should consider people’s feelings as well. If someone was mean to them and they were an immigrant then they would want people to welcome them and consider their feelings, so everyone should treat others how they would want to be treated.

The question: Why people don’t pick up the phone for others but expect them to pick up the phone for them?

Why didn’t the children go with their parents when they got deported?

The call: The author states “The state’s regime partnered robbery of the franchise with robbery of the purse.” (Coates 574)

The response: The government is basically in debt. It feels like the government is being robbed. This can be related to people when others rob them or when someone takes something. Robbery is a crime and apart of the law which relates back to the government explaining how the government is in debt. If anything, I feel like the government rob others which is a little confusing reading that the government being robbed. In my opinion, the government is over everything and everyone which means to me that the government cannot be robbed. In my opinion, the government made college a scam especially having students pay for an access code to do homework which makes a question comes to mind, how can the government actually get robbed. The only thing that comes to mind that could actually be a possibility for the government to get robbed is if someone tricks them or hacks into their system which I think is impossible. But in the reading, it does feel like the government is getting robbed which is what stood out to me because can the government actually get robbed?

The question: Can the government actually be robbed?

The call: In “Loot or Find: Fact or Frame,” the author says  “The most relevant and dominant frame is color blindness, or the belief that race is not a factor in how we make sense of the world.” (Harris and Carbado 625)

The response: I do feel like people tend to think that race is not a factor in how we make sense of the world. People tend to use race and don’t even know it us being used because of how much it is used which is shown everywhere. People think African Americans just do crime, drugs, and not attend school which becomes an economic situation. In “Class in America – 2012,” the author states “All Americans do not have equal opportunity to succeed, and class mobility in the United States is lower than that of the rest of the industrial world.” (Mantsios) This means that everyone doesn’t get the same benefits because of their class. These two readings can be similar because race could be a factor in that. For example, a white person might get the job before an African America even though they are both qualified and have the same qualities and everything just because he/she is white. The African American is losing the equal opportunity.

People are color blind to the use of race being use in the world. Economic situations can turn into a race problem because most people think African Americans are mainly criminals. Most companies and businesses most likely don’t give African Americans a chance and just go with the other person. Both of the readings can relate and tie in together because their are situations where they both became a  problem itself. Class shouldn’t matter so much because everyone works and still provide for their families. When it is divided, it becomes a problem and unfair. Everyone should get the same opportunity no matter what.

The question: Why does class matter so much?

Weekly Write, 10/13

I chose the topic I chose to do the argument essay on because I like and listen to hip-hop music and culture. One genre of music I grew up listening to was hip-hop. I think I am apart of the hip-hop culture. I also have favorite rappers and who I think is the best, so I can include that in my paper and explain why I think that with evidence. Hip-hop music has changed since I was little and listening to it then. I think I could write about this topic because I really like it and it interest me a lot.

I think when writing about this topic, I won’t be repeating myself so much. I also think when writing about this topic, I will have good points and I think the paper will turn out really good once it’s revised and done. I would have a lot to say and write about since I know something about it, and I feel like I am apart of that hip-hop culture. I hope to explain my claim/thesis good and the right way. I feel like this topic is good for me to write about since I like and listen to the music a lot, and I feel like I am somewhat apart of the hip-hop culture.

Weekly Write 1

This week in class from Ten Little Indians, in the story “Lawyer’s League” the character Richard encountered many things. One thing is that he stopped playing basketball and went to Washington, the school his parents went to, and wanted to pursue his dream in becoming a senator then the president. He still loved basketball. Someone invited him to play basketball with some of his lawyer friends. He then meets Big Bill and since Richard is good basketball, everything he did Big Bill wasn’t happy about it. Big Bill made a racist joke and that’s when Richard punched him in the face.

In my history class, my professor have us a syllabus. In the syllabus it had a schedule of what we will be doing. History is one of my weakest subjects and knowing that I am afraid that I won’t pass his class with the grade I want. If he has tutoring, I will go to every session because I really want all A’s or just A’s and B’s. Most likely I will do good in his class because I will try my best and focus.
