Final Reflective

I have learned a lot over this semester. I am sure that this course has help me become a better writer. I consider myself as not a good writer plus I don’t like writing. This course has been challenging and interesting. I have learned that I need to make more time and commitment to my papers to also help myself become a better writer. My experience has been different from high school writing from Writing 101 and frim Writing 102, learning in this writing class and learning in my other classes have a little connection but are also different, and the Writing 102 theme power and privilege is relatable to me and the world around me.

My high school writing and Writing 101 from last semester was different from this semester Writing 102. Last semester in Writing 101, I didn’t have a theme but this semester I did and it was power and privilege. While in high school, the writing was completely different from college writing. In high school, I didn’t write as much and most of the thing I’ve been writing in college I haven’t done before that I can remember. As the years of writing went by, it made me a better writer with every assignment. In this class, Writing 102, most of my writing was consistent because I kept making similar grades and I kept lacking in the same things. In my Synthesis and Researched Argument paper, I needed a stronger thesis as said from the feedback. When I revised the Researched paper, I made a better grade and gained extra points which is why I feel like each assignment helped me become a better writer and better in my weaknesses. In high school, writing was so easy which is probably why I struggle in it now. We barely wrote papers and coming into college writing, I felt unnprepared and I knew that I would struggle. For a daily write, I wrote about my strengths and weaknesses when writing a paper. (04/11/17) I think that these things are still the same but I have gotten better and I hope to continue to where I have no problems at all when writing a paper. When I do write a paper, peer review sometimes help when people are looking for mistakes and reading my paper trying to help. As I wrote for a daily write, I explained how it broadens my thoughts and lets me see the things I need to change. (02/09/17) Things were a lot different from high school writing and Writing 101 from Writing 102 but in a good way.

Learning in this writing class and learning in my other classes have a little connection. This writing class and my other classes are different because we don’t discuss the things going on with race in the world or gender roles, we just focus on what we are supposed to learn for that class only. For one class, we did see gender roles. The class was Theatre. We saw how it is somewhat the same from back then and now. We also talked about it in class and discussed how the gender roles affect lives. For one of the other writings we did for class that was in my CPB was about two sources and how women are depicted and how men see women. (Connections of the two sources) This was talked about in my writing class and shown and talked about in my theatre class. The other classes are chemistry, math, and psychology which we just focus on topics that are related to the subjects we are discussing or learning about in class. Learning in my writing class and learning in my other classes are different but benefits me in different ways.

The Writing 102 theme power and privilege is very relatable to me and the world around me. I am a black female so it is relatable me especially with some of the things we talked about in class like racism, gender roles, and discrimination. It also relates to me because I am a black female student at The University of Mississippi and here at Ole Miss there has been times where I was judged because of the color of my skin. The theme relates to the world around me because of all the things going on with the black race and the killing. Many African Americans are getting killed for looking like they’re up to no good or another person of another race feels threatened. For example, Trayvon Martin, who was an unarmed 18-year-old with a black hoodie, an Arizona, and Skittles walking home from the store. Another person of another race felt “threatened” by Trayvon. I can relate to this because I wonder if it would ever happen to my brother or any family member who could be walking home from school or from the store or anything. In my CPB for a CRQ, there was a quote that stood out to me about race and I talked about how it relates to me and the world around me and I also included Trayvon Martin and the racism still going on today. (CRQ 04/10) Also, many policemen are killing the black race because they also feel “threatened” so basically, they kill them first before someone of the black race could kill them first. For another example, Philando Castile, who was shot by a police officer when he told the officer that he has a license to carry and as he was reaching for it, he is shot. I wonder if it will ever happen to me or my family if any of us gets pulled over by a policeman. Another reason this theme was relatable to me is because I am a black female I may not get all the opportunities a white female or white male may get. In my CPB for a CRQ, there was a quote for the reading that was about a white male feeling more privileged to get a better job than McDonald’s. (CRQ 03/22) This is relatable because for example, if a white female and I are up for the same job and let’s just say I am more qualified for the job, I may not get it because of the color of my skin. This theme was very relatable to me and the world around me.

This writing course has helped me a lot. My experience from writing in high school and Writing 101 from Writing 102 was different but had some similarities, learning in this writing class and learning in my other classes had a little connection but was also different, and the power and privilege theme for this writing class was relatable to me and the world around me. I have learned a lot this semester in Writing. I have gotten better at writing but I still have some weaknesses to work on but later in my college years, I hope to not have a problem at all in writing a paper. I know I would become a better writer and will start to like writing once I know how to use my time wisely and make a commitment to complete a writing assignment/paper.

CRQ 04/10

The call: “You would know he found parallels between the struggles of those leaders and the issues people of color still face.”

The response: There are still many problems people of color still face today. Some things are job opportunities, more likely to be behind bars or dead than whites, school, the black culture, and so much more. These are problems are not getting better only worse. People of color are less likely to get a job if their competitor is white even though they may be more qualified for the job. Schools are also a problem because it seems as if they are getting re-segregated which is horrible. Blacks are also more likely to be behind bars for a harsh crime than whites just because the color of their skin. They are more likely to be dead mostly for no reason just because they are African American. They could just be walking home from the store with snacks just like Trayvon Martin and they would get killed because of false accusations of the person for them having a weapon or being a threat to others. It is constantly happening today, and this is how it is related to the word around me. It is related to the music I listen to because some artist talk about what is going on in the world and how it is wrong and should be stopped. No person of color should be judged or still face problems because racism has been over for years and also because they are people too just like any other person in this world. Everyone is the same no matter what color they are.

The question: Why do you think people can not get over racism or a person’s race?

CRQ 03/22

The call: “McDonald’s is gross and greasy. But my humiliation, and that of my friends and family wasn’t because I made burgers. It was because I was supposed to be better than that. Supposed to be more intelligent, more hard working and more talented than the people I worked with. I deserve a ‘good.’ I had an inflated sense of self that comes with being a person of privilege.”

The Response: The world around me relates to this context because people are more privilege than others especially in the job market. If there was a job opening and a black male and white male applied for it but the black male is more qualified for the job than the white male, it is a huge possibility that the white male will still get the job because of the color of his skin. The person of the article is more privilege which is why his friends and family are humiliated because they know he could get a “good” job. Many people sees McDonald’s as a place that is for people that can’t get a “good” job or as a disability. This is shown throughout the university because of the people that are mainly African Americans and they are working in the kitchens/cafeterias to provide food for all the students.

It is also shown on television. Most shows have whites as doctors, lawyers, CEOs, and more. The African Americans would be poor, struggling, or just in a bad place. It is rare that an African American would be successful on television, but now you see a lot but not more than whites especially in movies. This context s shown in everyday life and just all over the world. One thing is a job is a job and anyone and everyone deserves a “good” job no matter what. McDonald’s isn’t bad, it is just a fast food restaurant that is very popular and have been around a while. No specific person should be privilege for a job because everyone needs money to provide for their family and to survive. Everyone deserves a “good” job or just a job period.

The Question: Why does skin color most of the time be a determining factor on who gets the job or not?

03/21/17

Something that I watch that relates to this class is an video o Facebook about some white parents that adopted an African American girl. The man said that people judge them and look at them funny because of their black daughter. He then one day judges a man besides a white woman and he just watched him just in case he might tries something or may try to steal the other lady’s purse. He talks about how people judge them and he does the same thing. He then tells his black daughter and apologizes for it and explains that one day she might get judged because of the color of her skin or because she is with a white family and how she is to handle it.

02/21/17

The picture that stood out to me was the one with the 16-year old African American boy lynched and whites are just standing around watching. There are men, women, and even children that watched the boy get lynched. I think the author included this picture to show the  works of the mobs around and how everything was really bad back then and to show how things have gotten better now. This picture stood out to me because of all the people that were watching, and it looks like this was during the day. Plus, the boy was only 16-years old.

CRQ 01/30

The call: In “Loot or Find: Fact or Frame,” the author says  “The most relevant and dominant frame is color blindness, or the belief that race is not a factor in how we make sense of the world.” (Harris and Carbado 625)

The response: I do feel like people tend to think that race is not a factor in how we make sense of the world. People tend to use race and don’t even know it us being used because of how much it is used which is shown everywhere. People think African Americans just do crime, drugs, and not attend school which becomes an economic situation. In “Class in America – 2012,” the author states “All Americans do not have equal opportunity to succeed, and class mobility in the United States is lower than that of the rest of the industrial world.” (Mantsios) This means that everyone doesn’t get the same benefits because of their class. These two readings can be similar because race could be a factor in that. For example, a white person might get the job before an African America even though they are both qualified and have the same qualities and everything just because he/she is white. The African American is losing the equal opportunity.

People are color blind to the use of race being use in the world. Economic situations can turn into a race problem because most people think African Americans are mainly criminals. Most companies and businesses most likely don’t give African Americans a chance and just go with the other person. Both of the readings can relate and tie in together because their are situations where they both became a  problem itself. Class shouldn’t matter so much because everyone works and still provide for their families. When it is divided, it becomes a problem and unfair. Everyone should get the same opportunity no matter what.

The question: Why does class matter so much?
