John Elbow begins to talk about the language which is Standard Written English. He states that SWE is just the usage of correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. In college, some teachers forbid the use of “wrong language” for their students to start speaking and writing in “The Mothers Tounge”. Some immigrants have English as a second language and they are not used to speaking like other native English speakers. Elbow wants them to feel safe speaking their language and explains how they feel when they are told when they are using the wrong language instead of SWE. He shows the viewpoint of a non-English speaker then explains how their native language is a hindrance. Elbow wants others to show a little more empathy towards the non-English speakers and help them adjust to using both their native tongue and Standard Written English.

The article sheds some light on how people write how they talk and doesn’t seem like a disadvantage. Teachers need to be more aware of how their students talk and make them feel comfortable. All Engish should make everyone feel safe in school and hopefully make them gain more knowledge.
