Adverse Childhood Experience

Adverse childhood experiences are traumatic events occurring before age 18. Toxic stress occurs when a child is exposed to traumatic situations. These experiences can be divorce, violence, neglect, abuse or poverty. Poverty can affect a child’s development by making them prone to serious health problems such as poor nutrition, chronic diseases and mental health problems. Racism can affect a child’s mental health overall. The child might not feel safe of their race and the child might develop mental health problems such as anxiety or PTSD. Violence can affect a child’s emotional, psychological and mental development. The child may get into trouble in school and participate in violent behaviors. They might get involved in gangs, do drugs, start drinking at an early age, become violent around family and others or commit crimes that might end them up in jail. Adverse childhood experiences can affect someone’s literacy in a number of ways. The person might do poorly in school, have attention issues, they might fall behind their classmates and their overall learning abilities.

What the Eyes Don’t See

Dr. Mona is a pediatrician and she is aware of the water in Flint but she doesn’t really acknowledge it. Until one of her patients asked if she could switch from breastfeeding to formula and she asked was the water in the area as fine. The patient stated that she heard a thing about the water but Dr. Mona said it was safe. Then Dr. Mona finally heard about the water situation and she began to think about the children in the area and how they are getting sick so she decides to do something about it by speaking up. In my life, I have never made people aware of a problem that they don’t know because I don’t live in a rural area and everyone in my neighborhood knows everything that goes on. To make the world a better place I as an individual must use my voice and speak out on issues that go on in today’s society and make sure that I can help spread the word to others so they can help as well.

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words Donald Murray is explaining how a writer needs to write their drafts sop they can start the writing process. He starts off by saying that a writer must know what they are talking about and stick to that topic. He goes on by saying that the writer must be able to stand criticism and give it to others that write. Murray states that the writer’s ego must not in the way of their writing. Murray explains the process of writing a draft and the steps needed to have a full draft. He says that there are seven elements in order to write a draft. The first element is that the writer must scan their manuscript to make sure it’s clear. The writer must have an audience to show who they are talking to. The writer must include a form, survey their structure, development, dimensions, and finally have a tone.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Development- a part of writing that prepares the reader on what will happen next and to help them to understand what they are reading

“ Each part of it must be built in a way that will prepare the reader for the next part. Description, documentation, action, dialogue, metaphor-these and many other devices flesh out the skeleton so that the reader will be able to understand what is written.”

Manuscript- the draft

“Many writers just scan their manuscript at first, reading as quickly as possible for problems of subject and form.”

This relates back to me when I was in high school and my English 4 teacher had us review our drafts for any errors and to correct them along the way. This was very helpful to me because you don’t notice the mistakes until you read over them.

Fishman Journal Review

and Learning (December 1987), pp. 842-854

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words Eli Jr is learning about the power of literacy by reading the things that his parents bring home. He begins to listen to a story that his father is reading to him. His father’s voice makes everyone stop and listen. His parents are pro literacy parents but they still find a way for Eli Jr to read. His mother brings home books from a Christian bookstore and from other trusted sources. This when Eli becomes literate. Fishman wants us to know that the Amish can be literate in the ways that normal society does. Some Amish children begin to read through Amish songs and they interpret it into their literacy. They also read the bible to help them interpret the text they are reading. Fishman also states that just as Eli’s family began to read, they also write. This made Eli become an Amish reader and writer.

Literacy Questions

  1. Literacy to me is the way a person reads or writes due to the influence around them.
  2. One of my sponsors or literacy is music.
  3. Music has a great influence on me when it comes to literature. I express myself more by listening to music and write down how it makes me feel. It opens up my imagination for me to write many things from essays to poems or just simply writing things down. At first, I wasn’t too big of a fan of writing in general. Now that I listen to music, it gave me the will to write because of how the artist uses it to express their feeling and emotions. For me, I have a hard time writing anything because I can’t concentrate nor focus due to my ADHD. My ADHD makes me tend to wander off when I am writing and I hate when it does that. To combat my ADHD, I have to listen to music. While listening to music, I can express more in my writing because it gives me more creative energy.  Also my anxiety has an influence on when I write as well because I tend to worry about if I am writing correctly, am I using the correct grammar, spelling or just simply sticking to the main topic. Music gives me the strength to calm down and begin writing. Music to me is just a way to escape from the real world and it is like a boost of energy for me when I write.

Gee Reading Journal

Gee, James, James Paul Gee on Learning With Video Games

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words James Gee begins to explain what is literacy. He explains that literacy is the secondary control of language. He does this by showing the differences between acquisition and learning. Acquisition is being exposed to learning something. Learning is just teaching something step by step. He states that literacy is the combination of the two and gives an example in how that can come into play. One particular example is when he was explaining how literacy is somewhat like playing a video game in a YouTube video. He tells the audience that many learn how to play the game by reading the manual. Instead, he starts playing the game very poorly. This is the reason that he wants students to start being exposed to literacy first hand than just learning it.
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. Acquisition: being exposed to something to learn how to it

Learning: teaching how to do something step by step

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

This connects to what he was explaining in the video about him learning how to play a video game.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Can video games be a way of learning in literature?
