He begins to listen to a story that his father is reading to him. His father’s voice makes everyone stop and listen. His parents are pro literacy parents but they still find a way for Eli Jr to read. His mother brings home books from a Christian bookstore and from other trusted sources. This when Eli becomes literate. They also read the bible to help them interpret the text they are reading. Fishman also states that just as Eli’s family began to read, they also write. This made Eli become an Amish reader and writer.

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

Many parents want their child to start reading at san early age so they can begin to write their names and say full complete sentences.
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. Have you ever begin to read at an early age?
