Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words Donald Murray is explaining how a writer needs to write their drafts sop they can start the writing process. He starts off by saying that a writer must know what they are talking about and stick to that topic. He goes on by saying that the writer must be able to stand criticism and give it to others that write. Murray states that the writer’s ego must not in the way of their writing. Murray explains the process of writing a draft and the steps needed to have a full draft. He says that there are seven elements in order to write a draft. The first element is that the writer must scan their manuscript to make sure it’s clear. The writer must have an audience to show who they are talking to. The writer must include a form, survey their structure, development, dimensions, and finally have a tone.

“ Each part of it must be built in a way that will prepare the reader for the next part. Description, documentation, action, dialogue, metaphor-these and many other devices flesh out the skeleton so that the reader will be able to understand what is written.”

Manuscript- the draft

“Many writers just scan their manuscript at first, reading as quickly as possible for problems of subject and form.”

This relates back to me when I was in high school and my English 4 teacher had us review our drafts for any errors and to correct them along the way. This was very helpful to me because you don’t notice the mistakes until you read over them.

and Learning (December 1987), pp. 842-854

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words Eli Jr is learning about the power of literacy by reading the things that his parents bring home. He begins to listen to a story that his father is reading to him. His father’s voice makes everyone stop and listen. His parents are pro literacy parents but they still find a way for Eli Jr to read. His mother brings home books from a Christian bookstore and from other trusted sources. This when Eli becomes literate. Fishman wants us to know that the Amish can be literate in the ways that normal society does. Some Amish children begin to read through Amish songs and they interpret it into their literacy. They also read the bible to help them interpret the text they are reading. Fishman also states that just as Eli’s family began to read, they also write. This made Eli become an Amish reader and writer.

Literacy Questions

  1. Literacy to me is the way a person reads or writes due to the influence around them.
  2. One of my sponsors or literacy is music.
  3. Music has a great influence on me when it comes to literature. I express myself more by listening to music and write down how it makes me feel. It opens up my imagination for me to write many things from essays to poems or just simply writing things down. At first, I wasn’t too big of a fan of writing in general. Now that I listen to music, it gave me the will to write because of how the artist uses it to express their feeling and emotions. For me, I have a hard time writing anything because I can’t concentrate nor focus due to my ADHD. My ADHD makes me tend to wander off when I am writing and I hate when it does that. To combat my ADHD, I have to listen to music. While listening to music, I can express more in my writing because it gives me more creative energy.  Also my anxiety has an influence on when I write as well because I tend to worry about if I am writing correctly, am I using the correct grammar, spelling or just simply sticking to the main topic. Music gives me the strength to calm down and begin writing. Music to me is just a way to escape from the real world and it is like a boost of energy for me when I write.

Gee, James, James Paul Gee on Learning With Video Games

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words James Gee begins to explain what is literacy. He explains that literacy is the secondary control of language. He does this by showing the differences between acquisition and learning. Acquisition is being exposed to learning something. Learning is just teaching something step by step. He states that literacy is the combination of the two and gives an example in how that can come into play. One particular example is when he was explaining how literacy is somewhat like playing a video game in a YouTube video. He tells the audience that many learn how to play the game by reading the manual. Instead, he starts playing the game very poorly. This is the reason that he wants students to start being exposed to literacy first hand than just learning it.

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words Brandt talks about how sponsors can influence a person’s literacy. She states that in the early century, many were influenced by older relatives, teachers, editors, priests, politicians and influential authors. 20th century influences of literacy are magazines, peddled encyclopedias, essay contests, radio stations, toys, etc. A person’s literacy can be also be influenced by their educational level, environment, background, and race. In the podcast, Brant gave many examples of how people’s literacy was influenced. One woman was working for a radio company. She said that she was 19 at the time and she was a terrible writer. The people at the radio station would tell that she was bad at writing. She said that she would write countless times and they would rip up the paper in 10 seconds of reading.

Reflection

Whenever I read a story, I always never feel like I can relate to the character because of my social standing. To me it makes it even harder for me to enjoy the book. Point back at the video of Marley Dias, I always felt that reading was just a punishment because I never liked to read in the beginning. That’s when I started to open up more by reading books about my culture and other issues in the world. That’s when I started to like reading. I always put myself into the character’s shoes and see how they lived. It opened a world of imagination for me to discover. When I started to read more about issues in the world, I started to speak up about and informing others. Now I actively look on social media to see current things going on in the world and telling everyone I know about them.

Podcast Round Table Reflection

1. The two pieces of advice that I thought was helpful was getting to know your professor and take advantage of the free stuff. For the first advice, I know by now that all the professors want is for you to succeed and pass their class. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help if you’re having issues. Your professors will take time out of their busy schedule to assist you in anything so take good advantage of it.  Also, the professors will also help you with your weaknesses to help them become your strengths. The second piece of advice is to take advantage of the free stuff. Not everything in college will be handed to you. You as an individual will have to learn to make your own decisions and not sit around doing nothing. There are plenty of organizations that you can join to get to know people. There are plenty of free resources that will assist you in your major.

2. The one thing I am most looking forward to this year is making new friends and joining in as many organizations as I can so I want to be more active instead of sitting around and doing nothing. The least thing I am looking forward to this year is all the tests and work I have to do. For myself, I struggle to keep up with all my work and it stresses me out.

3. One advice I would give to a senior in high school is to always ask for help when you need it the most. Asking questions does not make you seem less intelligent. From my years in high school, I always asked questions to help me with my work or to explain the lesson to you in a different way. Ask your teachers for help they won’t mind at all.

Elbow, John. Inviting the Mother Tounge

Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words

John Elbow begins to talk about the language which is Standard Written English. He states that SWE is just the usage of correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. In college, some teachers forbid the use of “wrong language” for their students to start speaking and writing in “The Mothers Tounge”. Some immigrants have English as a second language and they are not used to speaking like other native English speakers. Elbow wants them to feel safe speaking their language and explains how they feel when they are told when they are using the wrong language instead of SWE. He shows the viewpoint of a non-English speaker then explains how their native language is a hindrance. Elbow wants others to show a little more empathy towards the non-English speakers and help them adjust to using both their native tongue and Standard Written English.

Standard Written English is a form of proper English that uses correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Standard Written English is no one’s native tongue because English is derived from all ethnicity.

The article sheds some light on how people write how they talk and doesn’t seem like a disadvantage. Teachers need to be more aware of how their students talk and make them feel comfortable. All Engish should make everyone feel safe in school and hopefully make them gain more knowledge.
