Myth of Freedom — Student Perspective 2

CALL

“As it turned out, the agents were looking too hard. The FBI misinterpreted various facts as conforming to their theory that Sami was a terroist mastermind.”

RESPONSE

Reading this essay honestly just broke my heart. After 9/11 the United States government took every action possible to try and “fix” what was broken and I don’t blame them for trying to keep the country safe and it’s people. Today, we still see changes in places such as airports, universities, and public places. I understand why they are so keen to want to keep us safe because I mean isn’t safety a number one priority? But can they at least respect others while in the process of doing so? Sami, a muslim student, who came to America looking for what everyone wants and wanted to get a good education because he knew that America would give him that. But just because he is muslim does not mean he is looking to pick a fight with the kid next to him in class. When they mentioned that Sami had a family, a wife and three kids with the ages ranging from nine, six, and three, was when I really began to feel for him and his family. Imagine a father coming to America with only so little that he can take in hope of fulfilling the “American Dream” and then something tragic happens and their life is flipped upside down. He spent so much time in solitary by himself because the government knew that just maybe they would find something. With countless emails and phone calls not only involving him but also his family. Today, it said they are now back in Saudi Arabia teaching at a University and even though he is hurt by these events he is still trying to reconcile. What a beautiful example of forgiveness in such a terrible situation.

QUESTION

Why does the government feel like they need to intrude on a person just because they are not the same color as them? Yes, 9/11 was a terrible situation and we all know that but are we hurting more people in the process of trying to “fix” what has been broken.

  1. I agree 100% on this response! I think the government is totally against us. They say we have so much freedom and everything, but yet they are contradicting everything that they say they give us. I really don’t understand.

  2. It is out of fear. Everything in this story derived this fear. And this fear often blinds us from seeing things for the what they really are and drives us to do crazy things.

  3. I don’t agree with what how government treats certain people. I think it’s judgmental and wrong, but we all went through what can be perceived as “hell” on 9/11 and the government suffered just as much as we all did. A lot of what the government does is meant in a way to protect us and make us all feel safe and sometimes that means looking into a persons past because of where they come from or what they look like. I am in no way saying what they do is okay because it’s not, but we also only find out 1/4 of what the government knows so maybe they have an agenda when dealing with someone like Sami.

  4. The government is a bunch of cons. They preach safety and law, and steal right and privacy. During a silent protest of a Trump campaign speech a Muslim lady was escorted out and along the way people spit and yelled and abused her just for her religious and ethnic heritage. The police escorting her out didn’t do anything about it. Members of our government falling short yet again.

  5. I feel as if the need to be overly safe as well as the underlying problems that exist in America plays a large part in the over abundance of profiling that takes place in this country. This coupled with the government being able to do this and for the most part get away with it, gives us the current results that we are seeing.

  6. I have not personally seen such racist profiling first hand in our post-9/11 society, but I have heard and studied such inhibitions that rule our culture in the past and I find it horrifying. Being a member of the military, I’ve found that the various changes after 9/11 pertain not only to policy and direct actions by officials, but even has begun to pervade the views of authority officials, who have found a new enemy to both motivate and drive the goals of their subordinates. A race, a culture, a nation of fellow human beings, after the actions of a few, have become the scapegoat of one of the most powerful and thought to be free, countries in the world.

  7. this reading excerpt takes me back to my history class the introduction of slavery announced that Europeans, Euro-Africans, and Africans were slaves because they were either working off dept, converting to Christianity, or to earn land. over time they abandoned that belief and began to profile based on race and ethnics. the government during this situation went off the saying “birds of a feather flock together” with the belief that all Muslims think the same and have the same goal which is to destroy America. They fail to realize that they are being hypocrites to the american belief of ” land of the free” with the the promise of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

  8. I guess the government is “fixing” the problem the only way they know how. The government just wants to be safe. No, it’s not right to incriminate innocent people, but what if he actually turned out to be guilty. There isn’t a way to prove someone’s innocence unless they are investigated. Maybe the process should be faster. Everyone is entitled for a speedy trial.

  9. The government is all about controlling. The government gives us a problem and lets society do the rest. You’ll hear the story of “an unarmed black male was shot and killed by a white police officer,” and next thing you know society starts the racial profiling. The government gives us topics and lets us do the racial stereotyping. The government is basically saying 9/11 attack was horrible and now we should look at every Muslim as a terrorist. Now that they have each race in fear of another race, they start the controlling.

  10. The United States is large on the subject of security. The government seems to be going to extremes to “fix” the “supposed” problem. In a way I understand, hurting a few feelings over loosing hundreds of lives again would seem to weigh more however, what are the odds that the ones they hurt would be the negative factor? Islamic culture is generally peaceful and this profiling is cruel. Rather than extensive pains at the airport, pains should be taken while buying a ticket for all flyers. This will help to not ruin people’s lives.
