Blog Brandt

Sponsors of Literacy by Deborah Brandt
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words

In the article, “Sponsors of Literacy” by Deborah Brandt, she discussed how society affects our literacy skills and how we consume content. She defines sponsors of literacy as, “are any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy—and gain advantage by it in some way” (p.166). Brandt mentioned not to focus on how groups work differently, but how they work in different economies. The author stated, “In fact, the interviews I conducted are filled with examples of how economic and political forces, some of them originating in quite distant corporate and government policies, affect people’s day-to-day ability to seek out and practice literacy” (p.172). I think the author did an amazing job seeking interviews, research and examples to create a much better understanding of the definition of a literacy sponsor.

Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author.

Sponsors of literacy is defined as an idea or person that has an influence on an individual’s literacy development.

How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?

How I believe that it is connected through other assignments would probably ho we are all influenced by any type of entertainment or reading.

Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion.

Would social media be considered a sponsor of literacy?

Identity

Cade Holt,

Through out my grade school years I travelled all over the country moving from school to school. During that time while meeting new people and creating new friendships, I also started to understand the different cultures. In general their way of life and normal routine are obviously different but the way they were taught drastically changed the way they wrote. For example, I went too many Christian schools that had a required religion class to pass that grade. One school would focus the writing material on religious thoughts and personal experiences with their faith. While another school would have the work focused on hard based evidence of the bible or certain religions. I would say my identity has been changed through my teachers and different cultures i have experienced.

Podcast

  1. a reflection on two pieces of advice you think may prove useful and why
  2. the thing you’re most and least looking forward to about this year
  3. advice you’d give to a student either entering 9th grade or going into senior year

Two pieces of advise that will be useful will learn to stay on top of my schoolwork since it is very easy for me to get behind and struggle catching up. Also to come in to school with a good attitude to continue working without any problems to work efficiently.

I will be looking forward to Greek life and all that entails with it such as networking and meeting a good group of guys. I will not be looking forward to the different online and in class classes because I find that stressful and problematic.

If I were giving advice to someone going into senior year of high school would be do the best you can do with your schoolwork and have your ACT where you want it at. Another piece of advice I would give them is to manage your time correctly.

Unit Reflections

For each major essay assignment, you will complete a long-form reflection about your experience writing the paper. Your teacher will provide specific instructions for these reflections.

Weekly Reflections

Weekly Reflections are longer, more thoughtful posts that you will complete about every week of the semester. Topics for these posts will vary by instructor, but they will usually be completed outside of class and have a specific word-count requirement.

Daily Writes

These are 5 minute or less quick writes that we’ll complete in class most days. This will also include any in-class writing about the readings that we do. If you don’t bring your tablet/laptop to class every day or if you prefer writing on paper during class, you’ll need to type up and post these after class.
