project #3 reflection

  1. In what ways have your writing skills improved as a result of completing this project? Be specific. I feel that after completing project #3 I have improved in stating how I feel about a topic. This project gave me an excuse to talk about something I feel impacts so many people. I also thought I improved in that I was able to find sources that went directly with what I wanted to make clear throughout this essay.
  2. What areas of weakness did this project highlight for you? Be specific. This project, like the others highlighted my weakness of repeating myself. I tend to catch myself repeating something I have stated beforehand, just using different words.
  3. What was the most stressful part(s) of completing Project #3? How did you attempt to deal with/overcome this stress? Were you successful? Explain. To be honest, I did not find myself stressed out while completing this project. I feel that since this project was a reflection on something I cared about, I feel it had me staying away from stress.
  4. What would you have done differently if you had a chance to go back and do this project all over again? What aspects of your writing process would you change, and which aspects would you keep? Explain. If I were to do this project all over again, the only thing I would do would be to make sure the other side had more of their views enlisted. I feel that my argument definentley took over, which I realize is not a bad thing because the essay was an argument.

Reflective writing video response

1. What are some things you learned by watching this video? Be specific. I learned a lot during this video, but I would say the one thing that stood out to me the most was the fact that reflective writing has not only to do with reflecting on the past, yet it has to do with reflecting on what could occur in future events.
                                       2. How is reflection important in becoming a better writer and student? Explain. Reflection is extremely important in becoming a better writer and student in that, it is important to be able to go in depth on things that have happened and things that could possibly and or are going to occur in the future. Having this skill will keep your audience engaged in what you are writing about.
                                       3. In your own mind, how is reflection an important skill outside the classroom (i.e.,
in our daily lives)? Explain. I think that reflection is an important skill outside the classroom, because when talking to someone you have not seen in a while, reflecting on past events with that person can show that you remember and that you care about things that have occurred between you and that person.

Wednesday October 21

                    1. What have you learned so far about crafting arguments and conducting academic research? So far I have learned that there are numerous types of arguing, and a I have been drafting my essay, I have been able to point out the different types as I go. I have also come to the realization that arguing is not always in a fighting way, yet it is two different view points stating what they believe. I feel my essay will have numerous counterarguments.

                   2. What specifically have you learned about the particular issue you’re researching? I have learned that there is a wide range of views on how my topic does and does not effect someone. I have also learned that people feel social media does the opposite of what I think it does to a teen.

                   3. What problems are you facing at this point? I would not say I am facing any problems, other than the fact that I have found so much on what the other side views, and I need to find more that agree with what I am writing on.

“For Arguments Sake”

1. What is Cohen’s main claim? That there are numerous different versions of arguing, and losing the argument is not always a bad thing. He also talks about the ways to argue, he is trying to make the point that just because it is an “argument” does not always mean its an actual argument, due to the different variations of arguing.

2. What main points does he use to support his claim? His three main points were the different types of arguing. The first type was arguments as war, referring to when someone is mad, causing shouting and anger. The second type was arguments as proofs, these are the ones that have to do with actual proof, such as when a math teacher is solving a problem and is proving a problem. Lastly, he discussed arguments as performances. Arguments as performances refer to when someone is trying to present something to a group, such as a politicians. He also states that other people chime in during an audience argument.

3. What ideas in this talk were new to you? The ideas that were new to me during this talk were the various types of arguing. When I think of an argument, I think of one thing and that one thing is a fight. From this video I learned how different arguments work and what they mean.

4. After watching this talk, what questions and/or counterarguments do you have for Cohen? I thought that everything he stated was accurate. I did not necessarily have any questions and or counterarguments, I simply felt as if he made me grab a better understanding on what exactly an argument is.

5. How might ideas from this video be useful to you as you continue to work on Project #3? I think that this video will be useful to project #3 because I am arguing what I believe within a thesis. I will have to persuade my audience and argue for them to believe in what I am stating.

Project #2 Unit Reflection

                   1. In what ways did your writing skills improve as a result of completing Project #2? Be Specific. Well, hopefully it was evident in my paper that my writing skills have improved. From my first paper I learned that I was not going in depth enough and was not providing specific examples as asked. So, to improve myself, in project #2 I went ahead and really tried to analyze the situation and make sure that in my essay I was providing what was actually asked for. I feel that this essay had less to write on, so maybe my sentences grew a little repetitive, although I tried to make sure that did not happen.
                   2. What areas of weakness in your writing did this project highlight for you? Be specific. This writing project, as I stated above definitely highlighted my weakness of repetition. This essay was also on one small topic and asked for a lot provided. I tried very hard to keep a small subject brad.
                   3. What was the most stressful part(s) of completing this project? How did you attempt to deal
with/overcome this stress? Explain. The most stressful part of this essay was getting my topic discussed in 1,000 words. I was struggling to space it out so it could fit the word requirement, and that is why I feel that my essay may have grown a little repetitive.
                   4. What’s one important thing about your work and/or learning in this unit that you want to be sure
to remember when it’s time to compose your Epilogue Post at the end of the semester. Explain. One thing that I would like to remember when I compose my Epilogue at the end of the semester would be how to sum things up in depth. I feel that when I get to the end of something I get a little slackish and find myself saying things that had been said previously. Over all,  I hope that I grow to only do better and perform well on the papers ahead.

Calorie Detective Response

1. What is the filmmaker’s purpose? Explain. I think that the filmmakers purpose is to show us that what we think were eating tends to be a lot more than what the labels say. He is showing us how we can be lied to with calories. He is also stating why post the amount of calories if they are not accurate.

2. Who is the filmmaker’s audience? Explain. I feel like the filmmakers audience is all Americans.

3. How does the filmmaker incorporate audience-based appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos)? Be specific. For Ethos, he gathered information which allowed him to speak on this topic. For Logos, he did research and than created an argument. Lastly for Pathos, he was talking to the audience about what he has gathered, and opened us to things we did not know about.

4. In what specific ways is this Op-Doc different from “Toys of War”? Explain. I think that it is different because the Toys of War was coming strictly from experience of what the kids had been going through.

Project #1 Unit Reflection

1. In what ways have your writing skills improved as a result of completing Project #1? Be specific. My writing skills have improved from Project #1 in that it got me back in to the groove of writing. I have not had to write a paper on something since March, so writing this reminded me of all the things that go in to writing a paper. This reminded me of grammar, spelling, and ways to write an analysis. I feel that this paper was hard for me to write, but will benefit me for the next.

2. What areas of weakness in your writing did this project highlight for you? Be specific. The part that I felt I was weakest in was the flow of my sentences. I felt that all of my sentences grew to be slightly choppy.

3. What was the most stressful part(s) of completing Project #1? How did you attempt to overcome

that stress? Were you successful? Be specific. The most stressful part of completing this project was just making sure I got a good grasp on what the story was about. This was a story I came in to bind sided, and the questions were specific, so I had to make sure I knew what I was talking about.  I feel that I was successful in understanding the story.

                   4. What’s something about your learning in this unit that you want to be sure to remember when

it’s time to compose your Epilogue Post at the end of the semester? I want to make sure that I remember proper ways to write an analysis because I feel that I have been lagging in that section.

Unit Reflections

For each major essay assignment, you will complete a long-form reflection about your experience writing the paper. Your teacher will provide specific instructions for these reflections.

Weekly Reflections

Weekly Reflections are longer, more thoughtful posts that you will complete about every week of the semester. Topics for these posts will vary by instructor, but they will usually be completed outside of class and have a specific word-count requirement.
