- Hi, my name is Ashley. I have a great nonfictional writing mind as my brain likes to work strictly with facts. However, I need to work on the flow of my writing and the creativity within my writing.
- I would like direct feedback from my group, anytime something is wrong or could be improved let me know. I am not one to get my feelings hurt so even if it sounds a little harsh I won’t take it that way and often times do speak in a blunt manner.
- IDK, I do not really like harry potter.

Reflection Post: Identitiy
My identity has never hindered my ability to feel comfortable in a situation with literacy. Rather, I am privileged in the fact that I am a caucasian, middle-class female with two parents educated in the American education system. Therefore, I have an advantage over many people in the literary aspect of things. Even with small setbacks such as being told how few women enter the medical field, or even the fact that my family was a lower class at the beginning of my life, I have never been given a reason for it to hinder my ability to read or write or feel comfortable doing so. Rather, both reading and writing were encouraged in my house.
Reading Journal Elbow
Title of Article + Proper MLA Citation for Works Cited page | Peter Elbow. “Inviting the Mother Tongue: Beyond “Mistakes,” “Bad English”, and “Wrong Language”” The Journal of Advanced Composition (1999) |
Summarize the article — include your reaction, thoughts, anything to help you remember its claims. 100 to 150 words | When I first began to read the article I did not agree, I was raised in a house where you acted appropriately based on situations. However, the article expresses that writing can be appropriated based on the assignment or reasoning for writing. I agree with this concept as someone who finds it hard to write due to the fact that I get so wrapped up in how I sound to my professor or if it’s proper. I believe writing would be more comfortable and easier to succeed at if there was more leeway with the use of proper English. I also believe this issue does stem partly from past beliefs of cultures and that belief of these cultures being less than others or not equal plays a part in how we view their writing and this is unfair and should be fixed. |
Define new terms and concepts by quoting or paraphrasing the original author. | “If I went along with you, I would know, consciously or not, that I would have to give in to a culture that thinks my language is defective or bad-or even that a core part of my very self is stupid or bad.” This spoke to me because I feel we do this with many things in everyday life because we hold people to such a peculiar and high standard in society. |
How does this reading connect to other articles from class and/or your own research?
|
Many articles my teachers assigned me did not address the opposite end of the argument the way Peter Elbow’s article did. Rather, it just gave us reasons to fix grammar and write in SWE like there was no other option to be considered. |
Based on the reading, craft one question to act as a springboard for class discussion. | When do you think it is appropriate to write in a comfortable tone or dialect compared to what is considered to be a social tone or dialect? |
FASTrack/Writ 101 Round Table
My first piece of advice that I took from the podcast was to get to know my professors and build those connections, not only in class but outside of class. I think it would be very helpful to have my professors as not only someone who lectures to me but as someone who genuinely teaches me and guides me through my year or maybe even all four. The next piece of advice I took from the podcast that I think will benefit me greatly was to do the dirty work in the class. I think with how hard writing organization is for me, doing the dirty work, or extra assignments will make it flow more smoothly and naturally by the end of the year due to the practice. Within the next year, I am most looking forward to making new friends. I took a gap year and traveled and it truly showed me how many amazing people there are everywhere you go and how much of a bond you can form with people anywhere you are. I am honestly least looking forward to writing. Writing does not feel natural to me and I think this will be a very challenging course for me even though I think it will benefit me enormously. The advice I would give to an upcoming senior is to make the most of this year do anything and everything you can within reason to make the most of the year. However, please remember your true friendships and the people that are good for you won’t be going anywhere and you have more time with them so don’t dwell over being sad about leaving next year.
