8/24 Daily Write

Today was a great first day!  I am impressed with the diversity of all of my FASTrack students this year.  So many different states represented!  It was especially good to learn your names and a bit about what drew each of you to the University of Mississippi.  And, of course, for me, it was wonderful to experience the excitement and anxiety that comes with the first day of class.

I am interested in seeing how all of you respond to Dr. Khayat’s keynote address tomorrow night at the Fall Convocation.  We will have our first class discussion on Wednesday over Chapters 1-20 of Khayat’s The Education of a Lifetime.  My favorite excerpt from this section is one in which Khayat reflects on his experiences in law school.  He writes, “I found that I loved reading, writing, and thinking.  To the surprise of many, I turned out to be intellectually curious” (Khayat 56).  I hope that the Convocation, as well as these first weeks of school, inspire in you an intellectual curiosity and a belief in your abilities to be an engaged member of a distinguished academic environment.

Happy reading and Hotty Toddy!
