Weekly Write 1/29

Well I just bought my book so im just now getting caught up on homework and my readings. Week 1 has been great overall , I just had to get all of my books and other things together. I feel somewhat confident about the synthesis essay , but everything seems easy at first until you start to actually doing it .

Class Discussion: Group 1 MWF @ 9

  1. What do you think are the key components of a disorganized family?
  2. Do you agree that minority families are more disconnected than any other ethnicity in America?
  3. What do you think is a solution to the growing problem in America ?

The story was good, and it kept you interested. You wouldn’t think that the children go to a Catholic school, I thought that was a bit unusual. We need to view and think of America in a more critical way. We must initiate a plan so that we can stop the problem, before there are no families in America.

Bridge Project

Beaches are what makes America so beautiful. Just going to a beach soothes your mind and makes you feel like nothing else matters. It gives you a new mindset while you take in a fresh breath of air. Beaches symbolize the struggle between land and sea as in within two people love and endurance.

Being American means freedom; being able to walk around on the 4th of July with family an friends without any interference. Being able to go to any restaurant and any country in the world. Being able to express yourself without a care in the world. Thank you for Independence day

We have the choice of eating pork, pizza, ice cream , flaming hot Cheetos or even a sandwich, basically whatever satisfies our appetite. We have the choice of choosing to eat healthy or go out to out favorite restaurant and eat a not so healthy meal. We are so lucky because most people around the country don’t get to do that.

Some Americans have the option to attend college after grade school or even some part of our lives. To us Americans college is the key to success, the way out , and most definitely the best experience any person could go through. Going to college is the best way to farther ones education and to accomplish a goal in life.

I believe it’s every little girls dream to walk down a runway to represent themselves as Miss America and even to compete for it. Whether you believe it or not its actually the “American Dream.” I always was the type to get dressed, get my makeup done, toes and nails , but I never had the guts to enter any types of pageants or beauty reviews.

Excerpt from last night’s journal assignment

Passage:  “The automatic equation that the native-born student makes between “America” and the United States seems to make sense only because our culture has traditionally endorsed the idea that the United States is America and, by implication, that other countries in this hemisphere are somehow inferior – not the genuine article. We tend to accept this equation and its unfortunate implications because we are products of our culture.”

Response:  This stands out the most to me because without explaining what America consists of I would have had the same mindset as the person who answered the question.I have had a mindset that United States is America. Yet I am reminded that United States is only a portion of America. I think we feel “privileged” to live in “America”.

Discussion on Intro to Rereading America

To get to know your writing groups and review last night’s reading, prepare an answer to the following question based on your writing group:

Group A:  Taking the beginning of the introduction into consideration as well as your own experiences, define what it means to be a critical thinker.

Group B:  In the second part of the reading, the editors define the cultural myths that make up this book.  What are the benefits to establishing cultural myths?  What about cultural myths are problematic or even contradictory?

Group C:  What seemed to be the most valuable advice in the final part of the reading?

New Semester Resolutions

I plan to grade more quickly and efficiently using online rubrics in Blackboard (so that students can receive more meaningful feedback).

I plan to allow students to lead more discussions so that they can get actively involved in the material.

I plan to reference resources for research more often and more clearly.
