My America

When I think of America, a lot of things come to mind. Two of the first thoughts that came to my mind are the stereotype that all Americans eat junk food on a daily basis, being the most overweight country, and the fact that America is traditionally an industrious country that has corporations that expand across the globe.

Every country in the world seems to hold the common belief that all Americans are greedy. This picture shows that on several levels. A bank is a commonly understood symbol for money and wealth. The green theme of the bank compliments this fact nicely and is one of thousands of banks across the nation, which shows exactly how important money is to the average American.

When I think of America, one of the first aspects of this culture that comes to mind is corporate America. This is the driving force of the economy and consumes the daily life of millions of cubicle-occupying Americans. This picture shows a tall office structure (of yet another bank), but also the construction of another building next to it. This shows the continuous expansion of corporate America.

This picture of a nice home exemplifies the land of opportunities. The American dream is one that give millions hope in this country. This dream is made possible by the opportunities given by this country. The opportunity here is the fact that every single person has the chance to start with nothing and, with hard work and determination, can earn millions.

The mall is a common image used to show the consumer society that controls our community. Driven by greed, this consumer society is shown by the millions of malls and stores throughout the entire country. Every person wants the newest version of whatever technology is available, and the mall properly demonstrates this.

Church is an organization that is all across the world, not just America. However, America is one of the only countries to be founded after the formation of Christianity. The money has the words “In God We Trust” inscribed on it. The Pledge of Allegiance uses the words “One nation under God”. The culture of the church and Christianity can be seen in many aspects of American lifestyle.

Daily Write 1-23-17

During this semester I hope to be able to have the will power to begin working on assignments earlier than just the day before they are due. It really shows in my work when I apply myself and begin the writing process well in advance, and I hope to be able to accomplish this more often. I could ensure that I begin working on a piece before it is due by setting deadlines for myself days in advance.

My Final Reflection

Writing 101 began this August as my first college class. I walked in the room full of strangers and took my seat in the back not sure of what was to come. But as the class went on I could tell this would actually be a class I could enjoy, which says a lot for me. Looking at my blog posts from what seems like forever ago, it surprises me how much I have grown as a writer and a student.

I have learned anything, it’s that procrastination has always been my greatest issue. I have constantly put off assignments until the last possible chance to do them. This has been an issue not only in this class, but throughout my life. I was planning on saving my late pass and getting the extra points, but on the argumentative essay I had to use it because I put it off until the last minute and didn’t finish in time. It is frustrating to me because I could have used those extra points now that the semester is over. This shows how I always look at the short term benefits (such as having an extra weekend to work on one assignment), as opposed to the long term ones.

The one assignment that will stick with me the most is the rhetorical analysis assignment. I learned the most from that essay. The lectures stuck with me and I feel as though that paper was the best work I did this semester. Now that I know how rhetorical analysis works, I will be able to detect a piece’s ethos, pathos, and logos with ease.

The tag cloud shows me how the writing process really stuck out to me this semester. In high school, I would wait until the night before (exemplifying my chronic procrastination problem), and then write the entire paper all at once. This class has showed me how writing is all a process. Writing a piece in multiple days, doing gallery walks, and peer reviews was something new to me. It really improved my writing skills and showed me exactly what I am capable of when I commit myself to my work. That is how my argumentative essay became my best work so far this year.

Overall, at the beginning of the year I was very skeptical of the EdBlogs. I was not sure I was going to be able to write about what was going on in my life, but now that it is December and I can look back over it all, I am glad that we did it. It is a very cool idea and I cannot wait to keep writing until May.

Final Day Post

Being one of the people who are still around on the last day of the semester has a bitter sweet feeling. It is nice to know that I have made it and will continue my academic career here, but it is sad to think about those who aren’t as fortunate. I hope to be this lucky at the end of every semester and eventually get my degree.

Unit 4

For unit 1 I could write about Native American stereotypes. I could also write about the current pipeline debate surrounding Native Americans. For unit 2 I could write about the election and the debates. For unit 3 I could write about whether or not the human genome should be altered and edited. I feel as though my best option is to rewrite my unit 3 essay.

Unit 3 Reflection

I had never really written a argumentative paper before this unit, so it really opened my eyes and showed me exactly what I am capable of with hard work. The contributions to my blog helped in many ways. They really sped up the research process with trying many different topics until I found the right one that interested me. They also helped as I was required to write an introduction and get the ball rolling on this paper. Some challenges this paper presented that others have not in this class are the difficulty of researching a specific topic and determining the validity of a source. This paper really hit many of the desired learning outcomes from the syllabus for this class. Research is an obvious one, along with exploration and argumentation, conventions and mechanics (as in every other paper), and writing process.

Weekly Write

We just heard an interview from Nevada (the location of the final debate), where the interviewer talked to two neighbors (one supported Trump and one supported Clinton). The Trump supporter built up her ethos by mentioning that she is a teacher who worries about educational resources who also lived in Mexico for some time. She also does a good job when it comes to “concession and refutation” when she says “I know he’s not my dream date”. This class has taught me how to work on assignments more than the day before they are due. This has improved my quality of work greatly. It has also taught me during argumentation that it is important to acknowledge the opposing view points.

Process Work

I feel as though I worked a lot harder on this paper than I have on any other in college so far. I am satisfied with my grade and I believe it is an accurate representation of my work. The feedback is very helpful, from things as trivial as grammar or typos to the word choice in my rhetorical analysis. I don’t see any feedback that confuses me because most of it is pretty straightforward. I can see typos and careless errors in both of my papers, which shows that I can proofread more before I turn in a final draft.
