Discussion Form: Media vs Society

Posted on

I am asking the question “How do you think the media is portraying society?” As I continue to read my article from the book and watch the television show that corresponds with the article, I began to realize how much the media is shaping our view of society. As I being to truly think about this idea, I have discovered how truthful that is. So much of our media today is exaggerated and far from the truth most of the times. But why do we continue to support that?

Discussion Form: Money or Success?

Posted on

As I was reading through the articles associated with the myth “Money and Success”, I found a common theme. Each of these texts, directly or indirectly, suggested that money brings people happiness. Even more eye opening, I say the pattern of those who do not have money and are in observation of those who do, tend to be depressed or wishing they had more. I think this is alarming, because this shows what America is turning into. The citizens are becoming greedy, selfish, not willing to find happiness in the joys that life has to offer. They become consumed with their jobs, in order to make more money, that they turn their attention away from their family and friends. The thought that constantly crossed my mind was “How can they call this happiness?”.

Moments thought through out the discussion:
-If money buys happiness, then that means a lot of working…would you trade your family time to work longer hours?
– It is not our place to judge people wether they are gay or not.
-Educators have their hands tied at times, so it is not always the teachers fault. (District tells them what they must teach)

Classroom Ideas

Posted on

After reviewing everybody’s PowerPoint presentations, I accumulated a list of ways that our writing class could be improved. First, I liked the idea about there being three different classroom set ups (independent, collaborative, and teacher led). Sometimes I feel that listening to a teacher present a PowerPoint and providing a corresponding assignment can be a bit repetitive and monotonous. While I still find value in teacher led lectures, this new idea of incorporating different classroom environments provides a decent and appropriate amount of change. Another idea that caught my attention was the idea of field trips. Classrooms are great in accomplishing a traditional lecture, but some of my favorite classes last semester were those that were taught else where. While I understand it is impossible to have an extravagant trip, I think there is plenty of things would could do in the community or even on campus. For example, say we had a paper that was about different cultures within The United States. I would find more motivation and inspiration by exploring cultures here in Oxford. Whether that be a walk through campus or a ride on the double decker bus, I think field trips would be a fun activity to do during class time to add variety to the curriculum. In addition to adding variety to our writing class, I liked the idea of having people or possibly other professors, with experience or insight on the material we are discussing, coming to our class and speaking to us. This is another way to gain more inspiration and motivation towards our writing. Lastly, one group mentioned the idea of having more group projects. While I tend to dislike group projects, I think that researching or accumulating ideas within a group setting is a good idea. In the past, I have found myself stuck on a particular assignment with no idea about a topic to write about. By having group discussions and research days, I think it would help provide not only fresh ideas, but fresh perspectives. Overall, I gained a lot of ideas from reviewing other classmates’ PowerPoints.

Op doc learning moment

When watching these videos in class, I learned what I wanted and didn’t want in my project. Things that I know I want to include is a variety of colors and simple typeface. I want it to look like a classroom to further express the topic and it’s environment. In contrast, I don’t want my video to go to fast. I did not like the last op-doc because I found myself trying to look at the pictures rather than listening to the message. In addition, I want to have plenty of negative space in order to keep the visuals and audience in focus. Overall, I learned a lot about how I want my video to look like.

Learning from others voiceovers

I learned a lot today listening to my peer’s voiceovers. In particular, I understand the value of clear organization and appropriate tone. One of my group members had a strong sense of voice in his recording. He had peeks in his voice accompanied by many questions asked periodically. It kept my attention and allowed me to continue to think along with him. Also, I learned from another member the importance of having a clear and concise flow to the recording. All the evidence and points were good, but by not having them in a easy to listen order made the story confusing. Overall, I learned a lot from my groups voiceovers.

Mistakes This Semester

This semester I have made several mistakes in writing as well as in other classes. In writing, I found that I procrastinated the drafting stages of my paper. Therefore, I had more work through the revising and editing stages of my papers. I have tried to space out my writing which has helped a lot on the current assignment. In addition to this, I have realized that I procrastinate in other classes. For example, I didn’t make the grades I wanted to on my tests because I only studied for tests the night before. I learned that if I study in small amounts over a week before the test, my score increases. Overall, I have learned many valuable lessons from the mistakes I have made this semester.

What do you love to learn?

One of my favorite things to do in my spare time is dance. I always find it fun and exciting to learn a new technique or skill with dance. I have been dancing since I was two, so I always look for new things to be taught. In addition, I have always loved learning new crafts, decorations and bulletin boards I can use when I have my own classroom one day. I have come to really enjoying Pinterest and all it’s creative tips to decorating a classroom. I have an entire board with things I will use to make my Kindergarten classroom come alive in the future. Overall, I find pleasure in learning new things in regards to dance and classroom decorations.

Previous Analysis

In the past, I have used analysis in multiple ways but never thought in depth about it. When reflecting on how I use analysis, I thought of times when I receive a grade back in a class. I use many skills of analysis to decode the meaning of that particular grade such as what the comments reflected, the percentage of my grade, how I could have prepared better, and figuring out my professors grading style. In return, I use the concluding analysis to understand my academic progress better. Overall, I realized that I use analysis in many ways throughout my life.

Daily Write: Writing Weaknesses

Posted on

My biggest fear when it comes to writing is the process of forming my ideas into an organized and well explained paper. I have no problem creating the points that I want to cover. My only issue is turning these thoughts into sentences with a balanced amount of analysis. I find myself most of the time giving good examples that cover the topic and main ideas. It is the elaboration and analysis of these examples that I struggle to formulate in my writings. In addition to the lack of explanation, I feel that my papers can be repetitive and inarticulate. In conclusion, I feel I am improving, but I still feel I struggle with the idea of creating an assignment overall.
